Ibrutinib raised my blood pressure. I took amlodipine to treat it which worked at first. I eventually added valsartan and it worked.
After a few years on ibrutinib I asked my doctor to switch me to Acalabrutinib, which supposedly has less risk of cardiotoxicity.
I’m now on acalabrutinib, but still taking bp meds. I would rather not be on any meds, for Cll, my bp, or otherwise.
But I have cancer and it is what it is. Every time I feel sorry for myself for taking meds I hate, I have to remind myself how much harsher treatments can be for other cancers and how fortunate I am to be treating my Cll and bp with a few oral meds with minimal side effects.
If you have access to acalabrutinib, it’s worth a discussion with your doctor about a switch. Acalabrutinib does appear, on average, to carry less risk of side effects than ibrutinib.
Ibrutinib is still a miracle drug fiord some of us and many people do very well on it. It does appear to raise bp though in a significant number of users.
The ibrutinib raised my BP by around 20 points - just enough to put it into the borderline category but then I had one or two short episodes of Atrial fibrilation. So they sent me to a cardiologist/oncologist who prescribed a very low dose (25 mg/day) of beta blocker called Metoprolol to bring the BP back to where it historically had been. That did the trick.
I was reluctant to take the BP medicine but his philosophy is that if you have a cancer medicine that's working well, it's easier to manage the BP than to switch from Ibrutinib to Acalabrutinib. So far, he's right.
My BP went up too on Imbruvica. I've been taking 25 mg. of Losartan and it's working for me. ALSO, I have gained weight so I don't know which caused the higher BP, weight or the drug.......little of both?
I've done some support group research and it seems like Imbruvica can put an extra 10 pounds on you. I don't want to do too much research because I'm happy with that explanation of why I've chubbed up a bit in the past five years.
HA!!! I have too.........and I'd rather blame Imbruvica than the home made ice cream we make and the fact that I like to bake pies, cakes, cookies, etc. I just know it couldn't be that!!!
