The BBC lives in fear of the current UK government's threat to cut its funding so this about as critical and balanced as it dares be right now: bbc.com/news/av/uk-57777428
For a reality check see the Lancet article which concludes:
"... we consider any strategy that tolerates high levels of infection to be both unethical and illogical. The UK Government must reconsider its current strategy and take urgent steps to protect the public, including children. We believe the government is embarking on a dangerous and unethical experiment, and we call on it to pause plans to abandon mitigations on July 19, 2021."
I thought the BBC video managed to carefully straddle the fence rather eloquently.
Unfortunately, we're experiencing the same thing in the US. We have enough vaccines for everyone, but there has been a disinformation campaign on social media and right-wing news to discourage masks and vaccines. Mask mandates for vaccinated people were removed, but nothing was done to enforce rules for the unvaccinated. The policy calculus seems to be that business matters more than lives, and if people refuse the vaccine it's on them. I've yet to see any public concern or discussion for blood cancer patients who continue to be vulnerable--vaccine or not.
The Delta variant is spreading fast and is now the dominant strain in the US. Hospitals in the state of Missouri are overwhelmed and running out of equipment. The patients are younger, sicker, they all have the Delta variant, and they are unvaccinated.
With millions still unvaccinated, the possibility of new variants looms and there is no guarantee that vaccines will continue to be effective against unknown variants.
I can't help wonder if choosing freedom over safety may be shortsighted in light of the Delta variant, the unmasked, unvaccinated, and unwilling?
Lastly, 1 in 10 Covid patients is being found to have long-term effects 8 months following even mild COVID-19. sciencedaily.com/releases/2... One has to wonder what that will cost the economy? I suspect Health Unlocked may end up with a forum for that group (whose symptoms may range in severity from mild to incapacitating, according to public health officials and health experts).
