CLL & Fasting in Ramadan

Dear Readers,

I just wanted to ask if it was ok to fast in Ramadan.

It’s the first time I’m fasting since being diagnosed with CLL and on W & W.

I don’t want to fast if it’s going to put me at more risk of catching something .

Thank you all in advance :-)

Pav

Can you reach your doctor?

If no satisfactory answer here try CLL Society or groups.io/g/CLLSLL .

If you get lucky Dr. Richard Furman sometimes chimes in for questions people have in the group.

Thank you so much for your post. 31 years is very encouraging. I am also vegetarian and periodically fast. I am 77, diagnosed with CLL in 2013 and on WW.

All the very best to you....there is just so much out there now....they are doing great things! You just hang in there and enjoy life.

I am on IVIG every 4 weeks but am not on treatment at this time.

I loved the Imbruvica but they pulled me off last July as I had two different types of pneumonia in both lungs....doing great and numbers are holding.

As a Jewess, I fast on certain days (Yom Kipur and others). My doctor told me to listen to my body, if I feel weak, I should drink and even eat. Health overrides religious restrictions. But I am sure my Moslem friends would agree, that sometimes state of mind gives you strength to overcome urges. I do fast and always feel cleansed by it.

My advice is ask a doctor, preferably a Moslem who understands the needs of your body and your soul!

Hi Pav

As you are Muslim, and have fasted before, I am answering on the basis that you know how to prepare for a fast. I say this because someone at my church suggested a 48 hour fast, and hadn't a clue about safety aspects of fasting.

Since you are aware of the preparation, my advice would be to try it see what happens and how you feel physically. I have studied Islam and I know home important it is to you too fast. I guess the ideal answer would come from a Muslim haematologist.

Take care, drink and/or eat when your body tells you it needs you too. I hope that you get the spiritual benefits you are hoping for.

I fast for 16 hours every day and have been in W&W for 18 years. My fasting hasn’t affected my CLL in any negative way, on the contrary I feel better when I fast. You just have to make sure you get all the nutrients your body needs when you eat… good luck 🙏
