No, they are not the same. You'd have heard it on this site first if it did change its name. Did your diagnosis change?

Where do you live

Either you have MBL which is often but not always a pre-cursor to CLL. However, if you’ve had a flow cytometry blood test leading to a diagnosis of CLL, I can only say I hope this doctor completes his training soon! 🙄

Are you under Watch & Wait and regularly checked by a haematologist?

Welcome billybunter:

All we know about you is you are in UK.

It is possible that you have the very, very early stages of CLL.

"Monoclonal B lymphocytosis (MBL) is defined as the presence of a clonal B-cell population in the peripheral blood with fewer than 5 × 109/L B-cells and no other signs of a lymphoproliferative disorder. The majority of cases of MBL have the immunophenotype of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). MBL can be categorized as either low count or high count based on whether the B-cell count is above or below 0.5 × 109/L. Low-count MBL can be detected in ∼5% of adults over the age of 40 years when assessed using standard-sensitivity flow cytometry assays. A number of biological and genetic characteristics distinguish low-count from high-count MBL. Whereas low-count MBL rarely progresses to CLL, high-count MBL progresses to CLL requiring therapy at a rate of 1% to 2% per year."

You might ask your Dr. for the results of a Flow Cytometry test that you have most likely been given. Ask for it for your files, as we each need to keep up with what is going on in our diagnoses.

Hopefully the above is the case and you will not be progressing to CLL for some time.

Let us know what you find out. And there are people here who can answer questions you may have as time goes on.

Not sure how this site works , i hope i am replying to the 4 replies that i received , i only saw my Hematologist a month ago and no new information was given to me , i have had CLL since 2008 ,i live in the UK , i have googled both CLL and MBL , all i know about my illness is that my white cells are very low , do not need treatment , all i can think of doing , is on my next visit to my Hematologist asking them , the only good thing i can think of if i have MBL is the fact that my holiday insurance might get cheaper

Get something in writing and keep it for your file. If you have CLL then you can show the hospital doctors that treat you if you're ever in the hospital again.
