Just wondering if there is any evidence of health issues arising from root canals and amalgum fillings? I receive information from family and friends stating that amalgum fillings contain mercury and could cause health issues. Just wondering if anyone has any evidence of this happening. Apparently there are dentists who put you through a regime of diet, etc when removing amalgums and root canals. Looking for advice
Many thanks

I read the evidence on amalgams over 30 years ago and had mine removed and replaced with composite fillings by one of the very few dentists who offered that service in Australia.
Dentists need special training on the removal as there is mercury vapour released when the amalgam is drilled out.
Although the dental establishment all use composite fillings now (and have done for many years), they have never admitted to amalgam doing any harm. There may have been potential financial claims if they did. So if asked why they changed to composite fillings, the answer is simply that they look better.
Root canals are a different animal. They are done when the tooth has died and it is a method of keeping a dead tooth in your mouth. Infections developing under the dead tooth are fairly common requiring a repeat procedure.
I suppose the bottom line is, how far does a person with CLL want to go to avoid infections?
I've never regretted having my amalgams removed, and I also don't have any root canals.
I have a couple of root canals that are 50 years old, and a couple since then -no problems. My sister pushed having all fillings replaced about that long ago. None of the rest of us did (5 siblings). None of us have had issues.
My rule of thumb - when family and friends give me medical advice , I smile and say thank you. None of them have medical school to back up their information, any more than I do when temped to search symptoms on google. If something they say interests me I check with my doctors or do some research using unbiased sources.
