Ginger ?

I am not familiar with ginger, but may include some ground ginger as spice in my diet. Does ginger affect CLL as medical condition ? Does ginger interfere with Imbrutinib (Imbruvica) ?

I haven’t heard ginger root being a problem for Ibruntnib. I could be wrong as your CLL specialist nurse

I know Coq10 isn’t recommend

And no probiotics while on Ibruntnib, only natural ones through yogurt or goat milk , kimchi

Ginger can affect clotting and is on just about every list of things to be avoided with Ibrutinib. You could ask your doctor about using very limited amounts occasionally, but I wouldn't experiment on your own.

But how much ginger are we taking about about ? I’m sure if you had it once a week it’s fine. Daily wouldn’t be a wise idea or taking the supplements ginger root extract but having some fresh ginger root in some soup occasionally I believe wouldn’t do you any harm

I love ginger tea, and my cardiologist OKed occasional use. I’m on Coumadin, and keeping my clotting time in range has been particularly difficult. I think that some things should be cleared by your doctor, not in an online group, as we don’t know anyone’s complete picture.

Where is the list ? Never seen any list with anything on it or our CLL specialist nurse and pharmacy didn’t mention anything about ginger

Can you share some of the lists you've seen that say ginger is contraindicated with Imbruvica? I can't seem to find any, and, in fact, one of the Imbruvica sites recommends ginger ale as an antidote for diarrhea.

I eat ginger all the time. If I feel a stomach upset, I eat a cube or two of crystallized ginger. I also make tea from slices of fresh ginger, turmeric, and lemon, and also from purchased tea bags.

CANUCK, do you have a link to advice, articles, saying that Q10 is unadvisable with Ibrutinib?

Canuck901 profile image
Canuck901 in reply toBluMts

Apparently it’s on the B.C. Cancer website but call your CLL specialist and nurse they went over our supplements list with us and said to NOT take COq10 with Ibruntnib.

Theory is coq10 protects cells , it’s an antioxidant supplement and while you are on Ibruntnib you want to kill those bad cells.

Thanks for your reply on question about Q10. I will check as you advise.

Won't check about taking a probiotic as my Docs actually recommended it and I think it's helped me, Different cources for different horses 😉. Now that's an absolute truth.

A probiotic isn’t recommended because you’re introducing bacteria, it not advised either . Apparently you should be eating , sauerkraut, kimchi , yogurt or goat milk as it’s a natural probiotic vs a supplement

Seville Oranges and Grapefruit juice affect the mucosa of the stomach causing increased absorption of the drug (more than the intended dose). nhs.uk/news/medication/pres...

The specific interaction is described well in the link you provided and is worth repeating here. "The authors report that grapefruit, grapefruit juice, and some other citrus fruit, including Seville oranges, limes and pomelos, contain a class of chemical called furanocoumarins. Furanocoumarins inhibit an enzyme, cytochrome P450 3A4, that is responsible for the inactivation of approximately half of all drugs.

This enzyme is found in the lining of the gut and in the liver. Furanocoumarins in grapefruit mainly inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 in the gut.

This means that if a drug that is normally broken down by cytochrome P450 3A4 is taken at the same time as grapefruit, more ‘active’ drug will be absorbed by the body, as less will have been inactivated by the enzyme.

The prescribed dose of these drugs takes into account the fact that some of the drug will be inactivated by P450 3A4. So if this doesn’t occur, it leads to the person being exposed to higher concentrations of the drug than was intended, and this can have adverse effects.

Furanocoumarins are not present in varieties of sweet orange, such as naval or Valencia oranges."

Thanks for the info! Grapefruits has the same effect on my blood pressure meds, my Md also told me to avoid black licorice for the same reasons. And since I cannot have them, today, I crave for them! LOL

If you look on foods to avoid while on Ibruntnib, websites say no to grapefruit and Seville oranges , that’s it

Just noticed also on the Janssen sheet: Supplements such as fish oil and vitamin E preparations should be avoided.

Yes I was surprised by that but when I looked at the back of my omega fish oil it said not suitable for Haemophiliacs. Sadly stopped using.

A friend recently discovered that thr reason she wasn't tolerating Imbruvica, even at the most reduced dose was that she was eating licorice.
