You're absolutely right to seek out a CLL specialist, but you may need to be prepared to travel to do it. I live in Los Angeles and as soon as my hematological oncologist told me I had CLL, I got on a plane and saw the best CLL specialists in the country. You may need to do the same. Ask your doctor to refer you. I saw Dr. Farrukh Awan at The James Cancer Center in Columbus Ohio, Dr. Michael Choi at Moores Cancer Center at UCSD/La Jolla, and Dr. Jeffrey Barnes at Mass General in Boston. My oncologist in L.A. is the quarterback of the team and consults them all for consensus on diagnosis and treatment. As a result, I was rushed into the clinical trial at UCSD and am doing GREAT! It takes a team.

Thanks for your response. Sure wish I had a QB. I did visit MDA for workup and recommendation. They're supposed to be best. I'm trying to setup a visit to Northwestern in Chicago for a second opinion.

I was diagnosed and treated 5 years ago by Dr. Faylona in LV. He is excellent!

I use a great website called Castle Connolly to find best specialists in a particular region. That, plus US News Best Cancer Hospitals, plus Google search, plus word-of-mouth (like you’re doing) triangulated to the very best options within 200 miles. My lesson learned: If I can travel (even by car), it’s worth it to do so for the very best care and access to clinical trials. Good luck and great health!

FYI, I'm on Medicare and the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Nevada refused to see me because my insurance was with a different medical group - even if I walked in and paid cash. I ended up being satisfied with my oncologist so I didn't go out of state to see any one else.

Good Afternoon misterbee….I live in Arizona and from this site I found an incredible doctor at University of California, Irvine in Orange, CA. Her name is Susan O'Brien and she is a CLL specialist extraordinaire. She came to UCI from MD Anderson about three years ago. She now has her own floor. She does clinic (sees patients) two days a week and she's also a professor and teaches. You can find videos of her on this forum. At my visits she always has a student with her that she's teaching. I highly recommend her. Carole
