How harmful is take two Cortisone injections...

I have had tendonitis... and the shoulder doctor prescribed a cortisone shot six weeks ago... it did help, and I went back today to get a second shot.... TOO LATE I THOUGHT THAT perhaps cortisone might be harmful to me... I am a recently diagnosed (8 months) and I am in W&W mode. I should have sought advice from this site before taking the drug (or better still called my oncologist before getting injection), as it may be counterproductive for CLL. Has anyone had adverse reactions or know of reasons not to take cortisone shots if you have CLL?

I have been in watch and wait for two years and I get them and have no problem. I don’t get them very often say once every six months. Pain pills do nothing for me when I need to relieve the bursa swelling. Cortisone is the answer.

Hi I have had them since diagnosis for tendinitis and was fine. However it is always wise to ask your specialist Dr or nurse before you start anything new.

Good luck

I had one into my torn rotator cuff and am not aware of contra-indications with CLL.

However cortisone can reek havoc on blood glucose levels for diabetics!

Cortisone = steroids = immune suppression but steroids are also used to deal with our autoimmune problems.

There is a treatment called HDMP that uses high dose steroids systemically to treat CLL.

In the video Dr. Castro cautions: "HDMP is not for everyone and can be associated with many side effects such as diabetes, serious bone problems, psychiatric issues, and life threatening infections, especially without proper prophylaxis and surveillance."

So there is no clear black & white choice- everything in moderation. However IMO- local injections and steroid topical are probably less likely to cause severe immune depression.

But as always, please get expert medical advice for your specific issues, this is NOT a subject to be crowd sourced from opinions of non medically trained patients.

I totally agree with Len... corticosteroid steriod use needs to be OK’d by your CLL hemaetologist.

I have also gotten cortisone shots for joint problems in both my hands. I have had no problems with them and also just got done taking pills for a tendon problem in my arm. Have been lucky so far only to have one problem at a time and at least one year apart.

I'm replying to all you wonderful people that helped put my mind at ease... I found the site that said there could be a conflict as it might pull my low immunity lower after I had the second shot. I was really bummed at myself for not checking further. Hearing that others have had cortisone without noticeable problems, really helps me breathe easier. I do plan on contacting my oncologist, as I have developed a cold (the same cough/mucous thing I'd had almost a year ago), so it could be that my immunity dipped, or there was no connection, and I was due for another cold.... Thank you all for your caring... it was good to have someone to talk with about this. I dare not discuss it with my husband, as he worries about me too much now (that is is pessimist personality). I'm living the wonderful life the Lord has given me... He is in charge, and I'll live not one instant longer than He deems right for me. Thank you all again!
