hi am aaliyah i have itp since age of 14 doc wanted to remove my spleen but am scared, aint there other ways can treat it

Hi aaliyah, can you tell us more about your situation. Do you have CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukaemia) or do you suffer with chronic ITP which you've had from your teenage years?

Have you been receiving treatment for your ITP like steroids and/or injections of IVIg?

It would help us to help you if you could provide more information.

As Newdawn says, it would help to have more details. I assume you know of the ITP support site on itpsupport.org.uk/index.htm

This lists several different treatments (under child and adult pages) - ending up with splenectomy. So ask about the others first

If you do need splenectomy, it is not as frightening as it sounds. I had mine out (as had AIHA complication of CLL) and took hard version of operation (they had to abandon keyhole surgery after 1.5 hours as my spleen was way too big for keyhole). Despite this, I had no pain and was back at work within 3 weeks (keyhole would be much quicker recovery time). You can easily live without a spleen (I have to take antibiotics as the lack of spleen further diminishes the immune response system)
