CLL and OSTEOPOROSIS treatment.: Hi I hope this... - CLL Support
CLL and OSTEOPOROSIS treatment.
Hi Nelliemay,
I was diagnosed with osteoporosis about the same time as my CLL diagnosis 8 years ago. I’ve been taking one tablet a week ever since (Risedronate 35mg) for the osteoporosis, except for 4 years ago when my CLL deteriorated and I was on FCR for 5 cycles. I stopped taking the Risedronate during treatment (against my consultant’s advice) and when I had a bone density scan a year later the osteoporosis had worsened quite significantly, so I went back on the tablets.
Never had any problems with the medication - just make sure I drink loads of water and don’t eat for about an hour afterwards. It seems to keep the osteoporosis in hand, and my main concern is the CLL which has kicked off again, so I’ve finished cycle 1 of BR and am about to start cycle 2 tomorrow.
Good luck with your health journey!

Osteo is not just a problem for women nor only a problem for the infirm. It effects us all and the best counter is to stay busy. Lifting weights may be the most important exercise for us who are aging.

My wonderful mother-in-law (yes she really is wonderful), has suffered from osteoporosis for many years. She's always been extremely active, and eats well. However, she is now in extreme pain because of several spontaneous fractures in her spine (due to her weak bones).
I'm sure most people are aware of the dangers of osteoporosis, but seeing my mother-in-law's situation has been a warning to me... Yes, we must check out possible side effects of any meds, but it is well worth trying to treat osteo if we can - before it gets too late...
I hope you have a helpful consult with your doctor next week, NellieMay. Do let us know how it goes...

yes thankyou for your reply,I will be starting a treatment soon I expect, give my love to your mother in law and I she has a better time when the weather warms up.
I will be having my 1st yearly infushon for osteoporosis soon,i am concerned about side effects but my consultant is keen for me to have it has anyone else had this ? I know its not the same for everyone.
My mother has had several infusions. She will be ninety next week. She has never mentioned any problems. I doubt if you will have any, especially compared to chemo, if you have had that.
Thanks for replying Nutcake its reasuring to hear about your mum I am waiting for appointment so any time now,I have read a lot of negative comments on the infusions but I will hope for the best because I have to think about the future.
