Hi Everyone,

First I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year, and really hope that life does treats you well this year.

Just wanted to know if someone out there can tell me if it is OK to drink Gingseng tea when you have CLL. I have tried it and quite like it, it says on the tin it is good for you. I also think I may have fybromyalgia. I have all the symptoms but have not been diagnosed yet as I am away for sometime on holiday.

I am not sure whether the symptoms I have are from the Chemo I had for my CLL which finished back in January last year or the Fibro. Can't go into all my symptons but basically my body is full of pain and I'm completely knackered all the time.

Take care everybody.

John

Hi John,

I see you were on the Bendamustine and Ofatumumab trial for your CLL treatment and will leave it to others to respond about whether that could be responsible for your symptoms.

With regard to ginseng, according to drugs.com ( drugs.com/drug-interactions... ) :

"Limited evidence exists for any established interactions, with most data derived from laboratory studies and healthy volunteers. Very few case reports exist; however, use ginseng cautiously with the following medicines: antidiabetic drugs/insulin, antipsychotic drugs, caffeine and other stimulants, furosemide, imatinib, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and nifedipine. Reports of interactions with warfarin and antiviral drugs are conflicting."

The site lists 114 drugs (439 brand and generic names) that are known to interact with ginseng:

drugs.com/drug-interactions...

all4naturalhealth.com/ginse... warns about taking it if you have high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or need invasive surgery or a dental extraction.

There was even a phase 3 clinical trial to check if taking it helped reduce respiratory infections in CLL patients, but the study results were not published :( :

clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show...

So it looks like provided you don't use any of the above drugs or have any of the above conditions, you can continue to enjoy your ginseng tea.

Hope this helps,

Neil

That ColdFX study by Wake Forest was published, eventually... it has very lack luster results... in CLL, but better results in an older healthy population, in a Canadian study...

It is a Canadian product... has been under some investigation...by the media for claims made.

HI John133

I finished FRC in September 2012.

I have been told that I have Polymyalgia Rheumatica, the only way to find out if I have it, is to take Steroids, (which I am loathe to take), apparently if the pain goes with Steroids then you have it. My pain is bearable at the moment, but I am so tired, have no energy and feeling very low. I am taking antibiotics at the moment due to a very bad chest infection, I was hospitalised for 10 days in December 2013 due to an unknown infection, so may be it the A/B that is causing me to feel down.

I wish you well, and a Happy and Healthy New Year to all.

I nearly always get depressed after taking antibiotics and it seems others do too. Penicillin doesn't have the same effect though and the low clears up faster when I feel well enough to exercise.

I was just reading about low platelet count yesterday and foods that might affect it negatively, Ginseng is listed as one of them. pdsa.org/about-itp/warnings...

I would take this into consideration if your platelet count is low.

*** Correction...

This list contains food and supplements that can change the way platelets work and make it more difficult for your blood to clot. They do not reduce the platelet count unless noted.
