It just means your white cell and lymphocyte counts are higher than the normal range - as they would be when you have CLL. The terms really don't mean anything without knowing the figures, and the trend - that is, what the counts have been in the past compared with what they are now.

Cytosis just means there is more than the usual number of cells. Lymphocytes are one of the white blood cell types, so if you have lymphocytosis, then you'll most likely also have leukocytosis - a raised white blood cell count (unless of course another white blood cell line is correspondingly low). It doesn't necessarily mean you have leukaemia - it could be due to an infection.

White blood and lymphocyte counts are both reported in your CBC (Complete Blood Count). You'll need to get the results of the Flow Cytometry interpreted for confirmation you actually have leukaemia and what type.

I hope that you'll soon know why you've been feeling unwell lately. If it is indeed CLL, then be reassured there are far worse leukaemias and that you are in good company on this site.

As David39 says, you need to know the figures and trend. If an infection is the cause, then the figures will eventually drop back. If you have leukaemia, then one of the indicators of how soon/whether you need treatment is how fast they grow - the doubling time.

If they could tell you that your Lymphocytes are high then there is lab work somewhere. Do you have the right to copies of your labs like we do in the US. I'm glad you have a referral, but, in the meantime you should be able to get copies of what has been done so far.

Usually Chris (cllcanada aka: toast) or Hairbear respond with links to info for new patients.

Suggest you go back to previous posts by looking for the box on the right side of your screen that says "Popular tags in Questions"

and then click "see more tags"

then choose one or all of these:

Hi Pozd

Good luck with your referral and subsequent test results, Iimmunophenotyping /flow cytometry is what determines the classic foot print of CLL. Of course raised white cells could be for a variety of reasons. Further to the jog from Len here is a recently written article on the Diagnosis of CLL by Dr Samir Agrawal MB ChB, BSc, MRCP, FRCPath, PhD Consultant Haematologist, St Bartholomew's Hospital (Barts), London and Timothy Farren BSc(HONS) MIBMS, Clinical Scientist, St Bartholomew’s Hospital (Barts), London.

The following article has been written for the CLL Support Association. It is aimed at patients and their carers and assumes almost no prior medical knowledge.

Here is a page of UK patient information put together for people recently diagnosed with CLL that explains much abot CLL and diagnosis in patient friendly writings. I hope the reasons for your elevated counts are narrowed down soon. In the event you are diagnosed with CLL this may be useful.

I wish you the very best at this difficult time for you, and favourable test results. I know how choking I found the diagnosis process and admit I had my own suspicians about CLL from readings of information available on the internet, try to keep an open mind and remember you are not alone with this we all relate . Keep asking questions.
