I feel we patients have to track this if we can - doctors do their best, but they have thousands of patients to track and we only have our own families to track. I'd also be ruthless about switching doctors if they won't take you off simvastatin or at least let you stop/start a few times to check for a link between the pills and the problems.

I was put on Atorvastatin and it messed my liver function which manifested itself with itching, lethargy and loss of appetite. Ask your GP for a blood test which should show up what side effects the simvastatin are causing.

I was then prescribed Rusavastatin which initially I was advised to take every other day and am now taking daily without side effects.

Simvastatin gave me horrible nightmares which were disturbing my quality of life so I sympathise. Good news is there are lots of different statins at different doses to fit your particular needs.

Maybe ask your doctor for a print out of your test results and see how high your cholesterol is. My experience is that they don't do this as a matter of course, but are happy to oblige when you do ask. Good luck.

On a slightly lighter note - since taking Simvastatin I have re-started a childhood habit of sleepwalking. A few months ago I woke up outside my house about 3 o'clock in the morning - the only reason I woke up was my feet were cold!!! Could have been worse I suppose but now I put the door key in different places when I go to bed.

Your reactions to simvastatin are very similar to mine. My normally sunny because tired, depressed and lacking any energy to do anything - together with aching limbs and very bad nigh sweats which caused sleeping problems. I've also had memory prioblems - all classic statin side effcts. On occasion when it all gets too much (as recently) I stop taking them - and I get back to my old self within a few days - which is why I KNOW its the statins causing the trouble! I asked doctor if I could try another satin, but she said that there wasn't one. I've subsequently found out (from a consultant friend) that simvastatin is the cheapest on the market, which it is so widely prescribed. I've just had a 6 week statin holiday - and am feeling better - but will go back on them shortly. I probably have FH - 3 generations of my family on both sides have died of heart related illness, but my cholesterol hovers around 8 when I don't take the statins. I am not having much luck in getting a doctor to advise anything other than to take simvastatin!

If you really need statins depending on your age you could be putting yourself in danger. I did exactly the same as you have done and very nearly needed an operation because of it. The aches and pains together with osteo arthritis are horrendous but I have tried different ones - my husband is on a different one and far better for him but it was useless for me.

I get so annoyed when GP's make daft comments like there aren't any other statins apart from simvastatin. Some GP's in my practice are more accommodating than others, so I pick who I want to see.

Have you been referred to a lipid clinic Clancypat...sounds like you need more specialist advice. Good luck.

Yeah, the internet can only help so much because there seem to be a range of reactions and few conclusions about what-helps-who-why yet.

Good luck!
