Hello! My LDL cholesterol was out of range at 3.5 nmol/L - had always been like this (I'm now 70). I discovered I have an elevated lp(a) level (127 nmol/L) which is a known risk factor for heart disease and a family history of aortic stenosis so although my HDL was fine (2 nmol/L) and triglycerides also (0.9 nmol/L) I asked my GP about statins. With 20 mg of atorvastatin daily, my LDL went down to 1.6 nmol/L. I also reduced saturated fat in my diet - I've been as vegetarian for 50 years and enjoyed cheese, so I have greatly reduced this to a thin slice once a week, cut out any fried food, pastry etc though I was never a big consumer of these, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, including an increase in green leafy ones, pulses, calcium-set tofu, low-fat dairy, and a smaller amount of grain (I don't tolerate gluten well), and gone back to eating oily fish twice a week. My GP was of the opinion that the changes to my diet as well as the statin have been responsible for the lower LDL cholesterol. Given that 20 mg of atorvastatin will give a cholesterol LDL reduction of up to 45%, and a 10 mg dose will give a reduction of 37%, I'm currently experimenting with taking the lower dose of 10 mg and will report back when I'v e had a cholesterol test. Hoping this is helpful.
