hi, I have just received my cholesterol results.

My mum has high cholesterol and my Nan had high cholesterol.

Cholesterol =7.1 mmol

High density lipoprotein = 1.51 mmol/l

Non -hDL cholesterol = 5.6mmol

Triglycerides 1.42mmol

I haven’t eaten before and tested at 8.30am

I am 38 years old ~ diagnosed with pcos.

Are these results bad?

how do I know if it’s hereditary or lifestyle!?

I wouldn’t say I’m unhealthy. I walk 7-10 miles at work. Do eat a lot of processed food but still eat veg and fruit. Cut out fizzy drinks 2 years ago and drink only squash… drinking water makes me gag(always has 🤣)

I’m 5”2 and weight 9stone

Should I tell my doctor of these results? It was done privately!

According to my gp 20% of cholesterol is influenced by diet and lifestyle but 80% is due to other factors like genetics, medical history, other meds taken.I am taking statins as my cholestetol was 5.4., so just above the 5. I have a healthy diet and lifestyle. my gp worked out my risk factor and because i have other medical issues it came out at 14% (10% or below is reccomended.)

Maybe talk to your gp, share the results and take it from there ? All the best :)

7.5 is not incredibly high, but obviously higher than doctors would like. I don't think they generally investigate familial hypercholesterolemia (hereditary high cholesterol) unless your cholesterol reading is in double figures and/or it's not kept under control by statins, but with your family history, they might. Bear in mind that there is a 50% chance of inheriting hypercholesterolemia; it's not a dead cert. I have it, my sister doesn't. Her cholesterol reading was about the same as yours, but responded to statins. And if you do have it, don't panic. There's a tremendous amount of research being done in this area at the moment, to discover the best treatment for it.

However, although you're getting lots of exercise, I would suggest you cut out the processed food (and tbh, the squashes too, as they contain an unhealthy amount of sugar). In the past, I've found that, despite all the meds I'm on, if I've been really busy and eating too many ready meals, cake and biscuits, my cholesterol level rises by a point or two frighteningly quickly, so you may be able to get your reading down to 5 through diet alone. I would also share your result with your GP and see what they advise.
