Cholesterol Medication Muscle Pain

I'm extremely glad I found this website...I recently spent about a month taking Statin medication for my high cholesterol and at some point I started experiencing bad muscle and joint pain in areas of my body I've never had pain before; My legs, neck, shoulders and even my hands; getting out of bed in the morning was brutal; I finally went off the medication approx. 10 days ago and some of the pain has diminished, however it appears it's going to take a while to get rid of all the areas of pain. I work out 4 days a week in the Gym and I know this pain is not from working out. I'd like to know if anyone else has had pain for a long time after discontinuing the medication.

Cheers, Alan

I had a similar experience and went back to the doctors who booked me in for an x ray.

The next meeting was the most surprising firstly the found some arthritis in shoulder and more surprising was that I was breathing from my shoulders, let me explain. You need to be aware of your shoulders and neck position when you do breathing exercises. If the shoulders are raised your diaphragm is pulled upwards. For me breathing wrong affected my collar bone and my shoulder, that and the statin and the arthritis it wasn't good.

It's better now having gone to breathing classes and changing my gym routine. It may not be the same for you but one thing I found was a full medical worked for me. I know my blood pressure age -how much air my lungs can take -my body mass and lots more. Best of all I'm back in the gym good luck!

I took atorvastatin for several months every other day. When blood work showed my TC and LDLs were still high, my PCP said to take it daily. It was 40mg. Shortly after I increased the dose to daily, I started with the squeezing pain in my feet, right foot worse than left. I went to my cardiologist. He stopped the atorvastatin, said to wait 6 weeks or so, and then start Rosuvastin 10mg every other day. I took it for a month, had repeat blood work, and stopped the rosuvastatin the night before the blood work. I went back to my cardiologist. My TC and LDLs were still high and the sensation never went away. It still hasn’t gone away. He started me on Repatha every other week. Throughout all of this, whether on or off either medication, I took and still take CoQ10, alpha lipoic acid, and now Vitamin D. I take whatever my research says will help. So far, nothing helps. I’ve read some people get relief as soon as they stop the medication. One person reported that it took seven months. I’ve been off rosuvastatin for six weeks. So, I’m not going to give up hope, given that it took someone seven months before he got relief. Also, I walk three miles every day, I weigh 110 pounds, I’m 5’1”, and I’m a 69 year old female. My plaque build up is in my carotid arteries. Calcium score for my coronary arteries is zero.

I would get off them immediately; wait until all pain disappears, then try another type of statin; some are worse than others..

I had a severe statin reaction as well, skeletal muscular, at the base of my right rear rib..awful!

I can empathize..

It took me several months and the heating pad to get it to calm down.

Hang tight and let me know how you are feeling, Alan..

Yes pain remained whether I continued or not. But one has to be sure something else is not at play.

How are you now after stopping statins mister J?
