You never know what is around the corner!

Friend of mine has just turned 80yo - he has always been a top athlete , mostly running, but these days he rides racing bicycles, swims miles and walks . Not an ounce of excess fat on him, doesn't smoke or drink, no cholesterol problems or high BP , I have always considered him to be the perfect specimen. Started to realise that he was struggling to cycle up a nearby hill which he regularly goes up - and feeling a general lack of energy - went to GP, had a stress test and found a 90% blockage of his left artery ( I think) -- they put a stent in him and he is back in business again. He was lucky to get some warning though .

Running especially prolonged long distance put extended rapid blood flow against the artery wall and perhaps causes damage which has to be repaired hence the plaque. Run for health not for some crazy idea about being an athlete

You probably aren't an athlete?? this kind of advice usually comes from non-athletes. As does the usual advice about running damaging knees mostly comes from overweight non-runners with dodgy knees.

Not really, played semi pro football, ran full and half marathons, 10k road races and a member of local running club. I still run but only shorter distances as i feel this is all we need to thrive
