I'm seeing the Dr next week so will bring up about genetic testing then. And will ask about the clinic at the same time. It was a fluke getting my cholesterol levels tested - I asked if it could be included with the other blood tests that were being done at the time. All my other results were ok especially the blood sugar one so I was shocked by the cholesterol results. Thank you for your advice - as for exercise that's another story altogether as I am limited in what I can do. I am going to ask what is the best way to include more activity into my life. Anyway thanks again.

oats are supposed to be really helpful - as in porridge, made with water.

There may be a reason why your level is higher than "normal" - and that is perhaps because of your ongoing health problems. I understand that Cholesterol is the healer of the body and if you have stresses on your body due to other health issues then your levels will be higher to compensate. (This is only MY theory and may NOT be your Drs!) However, I do believe that diet and exercise helps and can do no harm! Gently at first if you are not a regular walker do up to 30 mins twice a day. Diet rich in veg, fruit, wholegrains and "natural" fats (butter etc) with oily fish and good quality meats. Also lower your reliance on wheat based foods such as bread and pasta. Oat based cereals, oat cakes (savoury) and home baking with oats (flapjacks) if you have a sweet tooth (honey is a great alternative to sugar in some recipes) and you should start to see some progress. ALWAYS discuss any changed in regime with your GP and the best of health to you.

I notice you don't mention your triglycerides at all. Do you know what the reading was for them?

with a reading that high, probably its hereditary..they call it familial cholestenomia..or something like that..it means if one of your parent has a high cholesterol, then prolly you have it too and the cholesterol is over produced by the liver. mine is 8-9 too...statins reduce it to 6...if i dont take for a month,it goes up to 8-9...my diet is very simple, i am not much of an eater, do regular exercise and am very active...so plse get this sorted out before you decide on any regime...all the best

Recent medical research has shown pomegranate juice, just 1 oz per day will, over time , reduce cholesterol levels. Worth a try and it tastes lovely too.

HEART UK has lots of information on cholesterol lowering natural foods.

From my own limited knowledge: eat oily fish, oats, garlic, onions, almonds, drink red fruit drinks - yes, even red wine.

In my case, in addition to not eating saturated fats, and eating and drinking those foods I also take a "kyolic garlic" tablet (from my local Health Food store). In twelve months it reduced my total cholesterol level from 7.2 to 5.2. Even though not medically proved, for me, each time I stop taking them my levels rise and each time I start again, they fall.

Depending on where you live, there may be a local support group.

HEART UK always has a patients section at its AGM. I have been attending for over twenty years and always learn something new. I would put next year's date in your diary now.

Good luck and please let the forum know how you get on - we are all in the same boat, all with different ideas, all with individual bodies. It is up to you to discover what works best for your body.

I make my own muesli with good quality large rolled oats, oatbran, figs and cranberries and apricots all chopped up. Also linseed and nuts and other things. It really is lovely, it's healthy and fills you up.
