Can I claim Carer’s allowance for myself I live in Scotland and live with my mum and brother my mum claims for my brother but you can’t be a carer for 2 people, I heard you can claim it so as I can pay for the help I need

Are you disabled yourself and need someone to look after you? If so, do you want your mum to claim carers allowance for looking after you as well as your brother? If so, the rules state that the allowance can only be awarded for one person so she would not be able to claim for you too.

If you have PIP or DLA at the medium or higher rates some other person could help you and claim the allowance. However, they would have to be providing care for a minimum of 35 hours per week. It is taxable and it can be removed if they are earning more than £123 per week.

As I'm located in England, I don't know of anything that specifically relates to Scotland regarding benefits and can't help much. So I really just wanted to welcome you to this community of Carers.

In addition to Bella 395's helpful reply it might still be worth having a look at the Caring section of the Gov UK website, (gov.uk.) site as it pertains to the whole of the UK not just England. It should tell you where to look for any different rules that apply specifically to Scotland.

You can't claim Carers Allowance for yourself. A carer gets paid Carers Allowance. Unless you are over a certain age then you can claim Attendance Allowance yourself for your own care. However, Carers Allowance in Scotland is one of the devolved payments and we also get an extra amount every 6 months. Why, I don't know, but we do. It does make a small difference as you can imagine. It is not an amount that you can just claim. The person you care for has to qualify for the care needed and you have to provide care for this person for at least 35 hours per week plus have very limited employment earnings of £123 per week. If you go over by 1 pence you have your Carers Allowance stopped. It is one of the very binding problems of Carers Allowance and quite archaic in my view, but the rules are the rules.
