Hi .. my mother had a stroke 5 yrs ago and suffers from Dysphasia. She has lived with us since then. We have just retired, and are starting to find life difficult with her. We have never had any support. Question: Is then any support out there we could call on... can we put her into a home for rest bite ???

Hi Bob9876 and welcome to this caring community where other members will be able to help and support you. There is support and respite would be a possibility.

The Stroke Association

stroke.org.uk/ have branches all over the UK. Their helpline number is--

0303 3033 100. Have a look at their Finding Support section in your area. There are publications and information about stroke clubs and groups.

The following information may also be helpful to you---

Respite care is mentioned in this information. The respite services offered vary widely, so please ask your local authority about what is available in your area. You could also discuss your concerns with your mother's GP as he/she may be able to provide some support. Our Pinned Posts on the forum may also be helpful to you. It is very important you look after your health, also. Social Services can arrange some support also, following an assessment. There is information about this in the website listed directly above. Are any other members of the forum able to help Bob please?

Thank you and best wishes.

Hi Bob9876

A big welcome to the care community. Sorry to hear you are starting to struggle with caring for your mum. It's always a huge challenge to be someone's carer and it's even harder when there are speech problems, with communication.

I don't think I could have answered your question any more helpfully than MAS_Nurse has, but I just wanted to welcome you here and I hope that you get the help you so clearly need. Be assured there is lots of help out there, so, even though it takes lots of effort in these days of cost-cutting, it's well worth it, for all your sakes.

I hope you'll come back to us again in future; if not for advice then just to let us know how you are doing.

Very best wishes.
