Hello Mitchy, your diagnosis may have come as a bit of a shock to you but hopefully your doctor has advised you in diabetes2 and the sleep apnoea.

You may need to take medication, change your diet and be more active if possible. You should be able to get help with the sleep apnoea too and some people use masks at night to help.

I hope you get other replies and get all the support you need.

Wishing you all the best. Xxx

Hi Mitchy65 and welcome to this caring forum. As Sassy59 has posted, your diagnosis may have come as a bit of a shock to you, but please be reassured that these conditions can be successfully managed. Sleep Apnoea may lead to regularly interrupted sleep, which can have a big impact on quality of life. You will find a lot of information on NHS Choices. Treatment is available and you will find information about this on the following website----

nhs.uk/conditions/obstructi...

The use of a continuous positive airway pressure [CPAP device ] which prevents your airway closing while you sleep by delivering a continuous supply of compressed air through a mask is one of the treatments available.

Another useful website is --

Sleep Apnoea Trust

sleep-apnoea-trust.org

This has a patient information section, information about sleep clinics in the UK and information leaflets.

Your GP/Practice Nurse will be able to give you advice about diet. You may also like to have a look at Diabetes UK website----

diabetes.org.uk

If you continue to fall asleep, please visit your GP again and do stay on this forum where you will receive help and support from other members. Are any other members able to help Mitchy65, please? Thank you and best wishes.

Hi Mitchy65,

I suppose that, when you aren't rested enough at night through sleep apnoea, the likely consequence is that you will feel tired during the day, and definitely we oldies do tend anyway to sleep worse at night and then want to nod during the day. Add in your diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, and I'm sure you've got a perfect storm there.

I know how distressing it can be as I currently have a heart condition that often causes me to do the same thing as you do, and it's extremely frustrating to find that every time you want to read a book, or watch some TV, you suddenly waken with a start and realize you dropped off yet again.

But the main thing is to ask your health professionals, like your GP or surgery nurse for help and advice on this. I looked online for any support groups there might be out there, but whilst there seems to be lots advice and help for diabetes sufferers, there isn't much that's really informative or supportive for sleep apnoea. There's the Sleep Apnoea Trust but I couldn't find anything there relating to your specific problem.

I do hope you can find an individual or group to help you. Please come back and let us know if you manage to get some help with this.

Best wishes.

I wish ppl would understand so frustrating at times

Yes, Mitchy65. I'm lucky my family understands, but sometimes people think you are being just plain lazy or that you can somehow stop yourself 'zoning out', but it just isn't possible. Never mind, you know you can't stop it, I know you can't, and I can't either, so at least we can be allies!

Hi, I don't have the same diseases you have but due to tiredness with emphysema I have the same problem with dropping off to sleep from time to time without any warning. I'm with you one minute and gone the next, other people on the forum have the same problem, unfortunately I don't think there is a cure for it. It could be the warm weather we have been having. Maybe fresh and cold air keeps it at bay.

Doesn't help you I know but at least you are not alone in this.
