Hello Fodge and welcome to this caring and supportive community. Thank you for posting this for our members, we will try and give you some information but the person involved should consider speaking to their health professional as soon as possible so that they can get help.
There are many signs of alcohol related brain injury or type of dementia. I am enclosing some websites that I think may be able to give you an insight into this related illness.
I hope this is helpful and please stay on this community, also let us know how you get on and if we can help in any way further. Good luck.

Fodge, my understanding is that Dimentia is characterized by confusion and memory loss, and is often referred to as Alzheimers Disease. I do not know if there is a form of Dimentia that is primarily caused by alcohol abuse. Certainly, anyone displaying possible symptoms of Dimentia, whether they have an alcohol problem or not, should see a Neurologist as soon as possible. However, there is a type of Ataxia, or a lack of balance, which is largely caused by alcohol abuse. In the case of alcohol-induced Ataxia, it is my understanding that stopping the continued use of alcohol can decrease the speed at which the symptoms of the disease might increase.
