Not coping

I had surgery in 1997 for removal of an acoustic neuroma. This left me with one sided hearing and tinnitus. The tinnitus was always manageable and didn't interfere with my life. 3 years ago out of the blue it started in both ears and the volume was unbearable and still is. I cant sleep and cant function during the day. I find life just impossible.

I’m so sorry, Djbt, that the T is causing you so much trouble. Are you familiar with the website of the British Tinnitus Association? There is a lot of help and information there.

If you live in the UK then your doctor should be aware of and following pathways suggested by the National Institute for Clinical Evidence - you can have a look at these through the NICE website by putting “tinnitus” into their search box.

You will know already there’s no “cure” as such, and not to believe any ads you see unless supported by an audiologist or the charity.

The BTA helpline will be open on Monday from 9 until 5 if you want to talk to people who know all about it.

Very sorry to hear this. Just to say hope you get someone to talk to as Happy Rosie says and your tinnitus eases up. All the best. xx

Hi Djbt,Did they give you a hearing aid to help you after your operation? I am only asking as I have severe hearing loss in one ear (was checked for acoustic neuroma all they found was a brain

😁) and then I started to lose the hearing in my good ear. I now have a biCros hearing aid that really helps - it is actually meant for someone like yourself who has had this operation. My hearing ear is aided - my non-hearing ear I wear a microphone - (which is just another hearing aid type thing) and sound gets bluetoothed to my good ear. It has helped keep my tinnitus to a much lower level and really helps on a day to day basis. It's not easy just having one working ear. My guess is your hearing ear needs help - please try and get to see an audiologist. I really hope you feel better soon.
