I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis in the early 70s after I had bronchial pneumonia I'm now 73 years old

My question my doctor's have put me on carbocisteine 2 tablets 3 times a day has anyone actually had there bronchiectasis improve for taking these has it stopped you getting symptoms as bad from other attacks

Only been taking them for 2 weeks so too early for me to form an opinion,I don't want to take these the rest of my life if there's not a significant improvement

I take these 3 times and like you I couldn’t see much improvement after months so stopped taking them. In the time I wasn’t taking them my mucus built up and was much more sticky and due the recurrent infection I ended up with atelectasis due to blocked airways so my consultant insisted I restarted them. Because they change the consistency of the mucus I believe Im better off on them than off them as they help me with the clearances. They do take time to kick in, hope that helps!

MorningThanks very much for taking the time to reply I will carry on taking them for a couple of months it's really soul destroying when we cannot get a good run from chest infections and viruses I was also diagnosed with a post nasal drip so that aggravates the situation and age don't help either I find it's getting harder and longer to recover from each attack

I hope you manage to get some kind of respite symptoms and all we can do is soldier on

are you classed as immunosuppressant with the onset of covid I was getting letters from my local hospital putting me in that category I also have hereditary hemochromatosis and didn't know which one was classing me as immunosuppressant

stay safe

Yes it’s important to get on top of the chest infections, I’ve had my first chest infection free sample results back for the first time in 2 years and it’s because things weren’t under control so I could see the benefit of Carbocisteine until things calmed down really. I don’t think I’m classed as immunosuppressed but my diagnosis was quite recent and was offered covid boosters due my asthma so am not sure whether having bronchiectasis changes that or not. Hope you manage to get things under control, it’s a very frustrating condition!

I've been taking them for a few mths and already see an improvement, I've stayed on them and now take 2 in the morning and 2 at night..I already feel better but I've also been to pulmonary rehab as well, maybe that would be of benefit.

Thank you very much for your replies the feedback is much appreciated I will persevere with the tablets and I hope you all have relief from symptoms.Re immunosuppressant

it worth asking your consultant or gp if you are in this category if you're put in this category you will be entitled to free lateral flow tests from NHS/.gov order online box of 7 order as required I feel tests will be with us for the foreseeable future

And with this condition we are more susceptible to serious illness should we get covid

Stay safe and well everyone
