Hi! I was contacted by my GP that I had the bacteria pseodomonas aeruginosa in my lungs. I was prescribed Ciproflaxocin (think that's what it was calked). Unfortunately, it gave me heart palpitations and had to stop taking it after a week. Side effects nit very pleasant. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this? Also, does acid reflux, due to hiatus hernia, cause exacerbation of bronchiectasis? Thank you.

I suffer with bronchiectasis and you are right to be careful. My consultant explained that i should stay on Omaprazole as excess acid can reflux into the lungs and cause problems.

Thank you for that. I'm taking omaprazole twice daily at the moment as prescribed by GP as reflux quite bad.

I have the dreaded pseudomonas. It lurks in the corners of your lungs waiting to pounce. Cipro stopped working for me so I had a two week course of two lots of iv antibiotics and have nebulised colomycin ever since (3 years) which has kept it away. I think you may need help from your consultant on this as most GPs don’t understand Bronchiectasis. Good luck.

Reflux can absolutely exacerbate bronchiectasis- in my case, repeated aspiration is what caused the bronchiectasis to develop in the first place. Omeprazole will suppress the acid which can help, but it doesn’t stop the reflux itself from happening. Reducing the acid in your stomach will also allow different bacteria (such as pseudomonas) to live there and then travel up to your lungs.

In my case I got incredible relief from Nissen fundoplication surgery to stop the reflux from happening. I still have some visible bronchiectasis in my lungs but only have flare ups 1-2 times a year when I get colds.

I know this might not be the right choice for everyone, but I think it would be worth discussing with a GI and pulmonary specialist especially since you also have the hiatal hernia. In my case it completely changed, and likely saved, my life.
