Short term Ibuprofen use when diagnosed with cirrhosis?

OfftowalktheCamino profile image

Hi. My husband was diagnosed with cirrhosis a year ago. Thankfully he finally stopped drinking at the beginning of the year. He has really struggled, but has remained abstinent so far.

He is currently away in Europe on a work trip and has really pulled his back and is in a lot of pain. Paracetamol doesn’t seem to be helping that much. In the past he would take ibuprofen and this did help (he has had a bad back on and off for years). My question is, does anyone know if ibuprofen is ok for short term use to help him through the next week? He has never been told what pain relief he can or can’t take since diagnosis.

Thank you

Hi, sorry he's in pain and away from home. When my husband fell in 2021 and I had to take him to A&E a very helpful nurse said to have only paracetamol if he really needs something. Try ice packs or heat to help muscles relax. You can buy them and crack them to set them off, they are small enough to tuck inside your cloths. She also reccomend a TENs machine. Which I purchased for about £25. Which I admit to using myself when I've been digging the garden.

What I didn't mention is that a liver filters your blood but a damaged liver can't do it as well and anything he takes ie paracetamol, will remain in his system a lot longer. Therefor he shouldn't take that many or often because it can cause more damage. When he gets home maybe get him to chat to his Dr and ask what he recommends as you say he has trouble with his back. We used calpol as one sachet is half a paracetamol .

When I had cirrhosis, I was told by my hepatologist I could take it very sparingly and with loads of water - kinda last resort type of scenario. However, it is something you need to have ok' 'd really with the docs.

It poses a greater danger to your kidneys than anything else.

Thank you. He’s going to chat to the GP when back home to ask advice.
