I don't post very much these days, but I got to hear about some very interesting research that's going on into our understanding and treatment of Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE).

This is being carried out at the University College London (UCL) Institute for Liver & Digestive Health, and will hopefully see some new forms of treatment for the prevention of HE in the future.

The article entitled, "Ammonia build-up kills liver cells but can be prevented using existing drug" can be found here: ucl.ac.uk/news/2025/mar/amm...

I hope some of you find this of interest. It's also reassuring to know that research is still very much ongoing and hopefully better treatments in the future will help not only those with this debilitating condition, but also those unsung hero's the carers who put up with so much.

Hi Richard, hope you are well! Very interesting article, I actually didn't know that ammonia killed liver cells , but exciting to hear of the trial starting mid 2025 .

Thank you for signposting this UCL press release.

It it good to hear from the associated research paper; that further study to better understand the hepatotoxic effects of hyperammonemia, plus the potential development of human-relevant therapies, may at some point in the future: enable the controlled inhibition of RIPK1 and TLR4 to protect against hyperammonemia-induced liver injury.

Hi Richard, thanks for posting know the more research that goes into HE will really make a difference especially for those nearing end of life. For patients and those around them that get to witness the destruction of liver disease not just on body but mind, let's hope research gets moving to get patients relief x

LO-LA (L'ornithine L'aspartate) is used to treat Hepatic Encephalopathy with varying levels of success or otherwise (despite Lactulose, Rifaximin and Lo-la my hubby had his transplant almost 100% due to serious decline with HE).

It's good to hear they are still researching other possibilities with regards to identification and treatment of this horrific manifestations of liver disease.
