Cirrhosis and statins

I am a 67 Yr old female who was diagnosed with cirrhosis last year..I do not drink alcohol but was overweight. I was advised by my gp to come off statins as " they don't work after 3 years" I'd been on them for over 10 years..fast forward a year and I've lost 5 stone in weight ( intentionally) and my liver is no longer fatty... and showing improvement... however recent blood tests have shown an increase to 5.7 total cholestral. My Dr wants me back on statins but I'm worried about any damage to my liver.. advice??

Dear Jender58,

This is a question that your own health care professional is best placed to answer, as only they have access to your medical records.

We suggest talking this through with your own doctor or health care professional in the first instance.

Best wishes,

Morning When you say your liver is no longer fatty are you saying that you no longer have cirrhosis?

A fibroscan in Jan last year showed cirrhosis and a large fatty liver with three cysts... my latest ultra sound scan showed no fatty liver and only one small cyst.. my liver specialist said I'd shown a marked improvement but the liver itself was still scarred and stiff

I have cirrhosis of the liver and have been on a statin for a number of years.

As long as they're fully aware of the condition there's no obvious reason not to take them.

Best wishes - also congratulations on the weight loss. Important to embrace moving about now in order to keep it off and getting your heart rate up regularly to help as well.
