Hi, you are definitely in the right place. I have only just joined but there are loads of fab people on here that will definitely be able to answer any questions you have. X
What is your daughter’s history? I also have cirrhosis and I was diagnosed 2 years ago but I am currently healthy and living a normal life with no meds or symptoms at the moment. The lovely people on here are all at different stages so I’m sure you will get great support and advice x
In October 23 I took her to the Drs. She had really bad anemia and she’s lucky to be here. We went Straight to hospital to have tests done and that was when she was diagnosed with cirrhosis. Up until just before Xmas she was managing with medication for the asitices, but since Xmas the medication has stopped working. We’ve been in and out of hospital ever since. X
You are definitely on the correct site...I'm an 69 Yr old with Non Alcohol Cirrhosis..I also suffered with terrible ascites and was being drained every week. I was then told about TIPS a procedure which is not without risk but when successful as it has been with me is life changing. Please ask your daughters liver team if this is something that could be suitable..after of course having all the alternatives and risk explained. Good luck
Hi Carole, They think it’s alcohol related but they’re surprised because she’s so young. Since Xmas she’s been poorly with ascites, her kidneys and sodium levels not good. She’s currently in Derriford being well looked after. It’s been a rollercoaster since Xmas. As I said to Sassy I was managing but now I’m struggling with it. I’m being strong for my daughter but juggling about 10 different balls. Her emotions, my work( self employed hairdresser) and her beautiful dog. Arghh….
Hi, My cirrhosis is caused by an auto-immune condition, PBC, and Derriford literally saved my life. When attempting (yet another) variceal banding procedure in Exeter, I had a huge stomach bleed, so was transferred to Derriford for TIPSS. The team there is fantastic, so I'm sure your daughter is in the right place.
Hopefully as she is young, she'll get back to living a normal life
Welcome, you are definitely in the right place. There are no strange questions here - ask away. (We don't get into diagnosing people or giving medical advice - but we certainly share lived experience which helps each other better know what conversations to have with our own healthcare professionals - or those of the people for whom you are a carer).
If you are in the UK; you can also have a chat with the great Nurse-led Helpline Team of the British Liver Trust:
Call 0800 652 7330 between 9am and 3pm Monday, and 9am and 4pm Tuesday to Friday (excluding bank holidays) or email helpline@britishlivertrust.org.uk.
You are in a great place for support - I became my hubbies carer in 2012 when he was diagnosed with cirrhosis completely out of the blue. We've had some journey but he is now 7 months post transplant and doing superb.
No question is a silly one so fire away when you need to - always someone here to offer support.
I’m knew here too, diagnosed June 2024. This forum is really great and hopefully helps to reassure you that you and your daughter are not alone with what you are going through. The British Liver trust mentioned are a valuable resource too x
If you are in the UK and would find it useful to talk things over, our nurse-led helpline is open Monday 9am to 3pm and Tuesday to Friday 9am to 4pm on 0800 652 7330 excluding bank holidays.
We also facilitate a range of virtual support groups for people in the UK living with a liver condition (and their families and carers). If you would find it helpful to speak to others with shared experience, you can register to join a group here:
Hello I was diagnosed with decompensated liver disease/ cirrhosis and ascites in April 2023 due to alcohol consumption and this forum has been a massive help to me as a lot what the doctors say can be quite confusing. I stayed in hospital for nearly 3 weeks, had a detox and went home with daily medication. I have stayed off the alcohol and by June 2023 my liver was functioning well again. I am 9 months sober and generally live a normal life. I attend groups with people also in recovery which is brilliant as they understand how it really feels. Good luck to you and your daughter she is lucky to have you looking after her.
I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. I am going through the same with my husband at the moment, but I can't imagine how it must feel to see someone so young going through it all. In addition to this forum the BLT offers online support groups which meet monthly. The carer's one is this afternoon but next month's will probably be in the evening. It is a very supportive and informative group and this is the link. britishlivertrust.org.uk/in... hope that being young your daughter might qualify for a transplant and that you are getting all the help and support you need. Your hospital may have a carer's lounge where you can get some help with any questions you have. I have just discovered this at our hospital and they are lovely. Look after yourself too. As carer's we sometimes forget that.
I’m sorry too about your husband. It’s something we don’t see coming hey? Thankyou for the link. Everyone has been so lovely on here. It’s great to know there’s the support out there especially when you’re new to all this. You look after yourself as well 😊x
Hi, I’m sorry to hear that your daughter is so poorly. She’s in the right place and so are you. It can be really difficult juggling so many responsibilities and emotions. There are lots of sources of support out there. Citizens Advice can help with advice on benefits and local welfare support. Your daughter might be eligible for Personal Independence Payment or PIP which might take the pressure off a bit financially. The cinnamon trust might be able to help with your daughter’s dog or there might be a local charity that can help with dog walking or dog sitting. They are a wonderful comfort but a lot of had work and other dog owners are well aware and willing to help. Hang in there, there are lots of people on here who have been where you are and have come out the other side.
