Afternoon!I have had polycystic liver disease for the last 10-12years and have been told that I will be needing a liver transplant to help my symptoms and improve my quality of life. I have exhausted all other options.
The final decision will be made next month after my next MRI.
I am aware that I'll need months of tests before being put on the list and that I could be on there for a year or so as my liver is functioning well - it just looks like a giant bunch of grapes!
Typically my current mortgage protection plan and critical illness cover is coming to an end in 2weeks time. I am now trying to find cover elsewhere and the insurance companies that I have contacted so far have said I need to at least be on the list or have had the surgery before they will cover me. This seems pretty unfair as the reason I would need to tap into the critical illness cover would be while being off work after the transplant.
Has anyone managed to find an insurance company that will cover a liver transplant and recovery from it?
Thanks

Hi, you will be very unlikely to get any kind of Life insurance whilst on the transplant list or after transplant, if you do the premiums will be extremely high.If you use Facebook please feel free to join our friendly and knowledgeable group called liver transplant support uk, thousands of people that have been in your situation, I know we have insurance experts in our group.
my advice would be to do it asap. I was diagnosed when I was 59 and the cover expired on my 60th birthday. They tried their best to get out of it but they had to pay in the end! Good luck.
Well I tried to claim but as I've not had a transplant yet I can't claim. However, the same company won't renew the cover either. In a catch-22 situation and feel pretty annoyed.
They refused me at first but I was determined after paying it for over 20 years. I exaggerated my condition, googled symptoms etc. one of the common symptoms of liver disease is extreme fatigue. I told them that’s why I couldn’t work. Try it, you have nothing to lose.
I don't have to exaggerate my symptoms as I have extreme fatigue and chronic pain. But they told me that I wouldn't be covered until I actually had the transplant.I'll try once more, just in case!
They made me have an assesment with an independent doctor. The thing you have to prove is that your symptoms prevent you from working. That’s what I meant by exaggerating. I told them that due to the fatigue and chaotic sleep patterns I had very poor concentration.
Definitely try to claim asap as I feel you’ll find it difficult to get new cover or at best you may get cover but with an exclusion for anything to do with your liver (as it is highly probable you will claim) as they are in the business to make money. Good luck.
