Fibroscan

Hi - I had a fibroscan on 3rd January 2025. Turns out I have a fatty liver with Kpa of 10.1 and a IQR/MED of 12%. I need to drastically cut down on my alcohol intake. Just wondering if anyone knows how quickly the liver scarring/damage can be improved

thanks

I think you could see an improvement by your next fibroscan if it is in 6 months or longer. However that is a good question for your specialist. I have my second fibroscan this summer, about 10 months after my first. By the time I could get my first scheduled I had already made changes to diet and exercise for 3 months (and lost almost 10% of my body weight). Fatty liver had shown up on an unrelated ultrasound. So perhaps I already had lowered things by the time I had the fibroscan.

Tysm for your reply. My next fibroscan is in 12 months. However, i have my annual GP health check next month and wondering if my liver function blood test could show an improvement so soon. I've cut down alcohol to under 14 units a week.... was over 60 before, and changed my diet. Hoping for better results for encouragement

I'm not sure what level of alcohol would lower LFT's but less is always better and you are doing a great job moving toward zero...I understand that quitting too fast can cause serious health issues. I think many blood tests can change very quickly with changes to diet, alcohol etc. so you may well see some improvement next time. I noticed my triglycerides came back to normal in a matter of months of weight loss and healthy diet so I take that as a sign that my liver is getting healthier.

Once alcohol has damaged your liver you should quit completely.

As time passes it takes less and less alcohol to do more and more damage.

Think of it as your now alergic to booze and even a small amount keeps the damage progressing.

If you continue drinking 14 units a week your next scans and bloods are very likely to be worse.

Thanks Roy... I'll take that on board

I used slightly improved test results as a permit to carry on drinking.A few years later BAM😭 liver cirrhosis.

Hi I have pbc but my first scan was 12.5% and the second one 18 mths later was 7 % so it certainly improves itself. I did however lose weight and ate a healthy balanced diet and cut alcohol altogether for about 6mths to start and now just choose certain times to drink and in moderation.

Hi - thank you for your reply. Very encouraging. I have changed to a much healthier diet and have stopped drinking altogether. I have lost 5 pounds in the last couple of weeks. Fingers crossed I also get better results next time. Good luck!

Hi. Mine dropped from 13.4 to 4.3 in 12 months. I did cut out alcohol completely though, improved my diet considerably and increased exercise. I would definitely look at cutting it out completely if you want the best chance of reducing it. Feel free to see my post on this for more detail. (I’m sure there must be a way to copy and paste the link on here but my skills are sadly lacking on that front!)
