I've written here a few times and have found your comments very helpful. My partner was hospitalised before Christmas with HB level of 60 he was given 3 units of blood and two iron infusions. He had an endoscopy with no obvious bleed a ct scan which showed portal hypertension a noduled liver, a homogenised spleen and some fluid in the abdomen which i believe is normal no ascites was mentioned. He does take 2 tablets for his oedema.
Since I last wrote I fear he is getting worse not better.
He's now on sleeping tablets and anti depressants. I also am aware that he is at least sporadically drinking (admits when caught)
I guess my question is is anemia linking to worsening liver. I have been down the wormhole of Google and sufficiently scared myself

hi I’m sorry for your experience. The only thing I can say is that if you drink alcohol it does deplete your appetite and therefore you will be malnourished. I had to be given iron infusion once but I stopped alcohol completely my body just flourished. It’s hard but honestly the body is a wonderful thing and if he can tackle the alcohol I’m sure things may get better. I was in hospital with a lady that was yellow had ascites HE and nightly blood transfusion s . She also had sores on her legs the list goes on . I’ve seen her now and she looks remarkable. You wouldn’t have known anything was wrong . So stay strong and keep trying to battle with the demon that is drink it is an illness .these are my own personal experiences. Wishing you luck and sending strength x
I am sorry to hear about your husband. It sounds a very similar situation to mine. As Etymolog has said, my husband's anaemia improved when he stopped drinking and started eating properly as he was malnourished He had had gastritis which was partly blamed but after 18 months sobriety this has gone too. He is still a bit anaemic and probably always will be but so much better than before. His doctor prescribed iron tablets but wouldn't give him sleeping pills. It will be hard for your husband to give up alcohol, but I hope he can because he will feel so much better physically.
Well I think k you already know the answer! If he continues to drink even just alittle it will push him futher down . his mind set is not so good . So I can only pray for him
hi , hope things improve my mum HB level was low and she also has had several iron transfusions but now on 3 iron tablets a day and has been stable , take care
