I would like to know too. Especially seemingly harmless things like topical creams or nasal sprays. How much is absorbed by the liver.

Everything that enters your body is filtered through the liver to some extent. However, some medicines are life saving and important so its for professionals to decide what you should or shouldnt take - best to run any concerns past your GP. Other than that, in general, the less work you give your liver to do, the better!!

Well said. This is the basis that I operate on too. 👍😊

There are so many things that might affect the liver, and not just medications. Some things are unavoidable. Things that on their own may be relatively harmless could mount up if lots are used. My personal view is that you need to be aware of, and avoid, anything that is a definite no-no. I think the British Liver Trust has information about such things on the website. If you know or suspect you have liver issues then my personal approach is to treat everything with caution and weigh up the risk/reward ratio. For example, if you had a particularly itchy rash but the cream might possibly have an effect on the liver then a short course of cream to get rid of a really tiresome problem may be entirely worthwhile. But eating an entire box of liqueur chocolates (refined sugar, fat and alcohol) because you are in a bad mood and want comfort food would probably not seem worthwhile in the greater scheme of things, however much you enjoyed it in the moment. You might then decide to stick to a couple of the chocolates rather than the whole box.

If you have a normal liver it’s very unusual for anything taken in therapeutic doses to do permanent damage, and drugs that are known to be hepatoxic are usually accompanied by lft tests to ensure they aren’t doing damage.

If you have liver diseases, anything and everything can be damaging depending on severity.

There is a website that lists hepatoxicity of drugs used by some clinicians, I’m not going to link to it as likely be against the rules if I haven’t broken rules by mentioning it already..
