LOLA making HE worse??

hi all,

My dad has been on LOLA for nearly 2 weeks and at first I thought I saw improvement, he was very normal in the mornings and I had a few normal conversations with him in the evening, but for the last few days his HE has got worse. I’m struggling to find any pattern to his severity in HE, there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. He has actually been taking his medication thoroughly for the last week and it seems that’s making him worse? Has anyone ever had LOLA make HE worse? He also took lots of lactulose on Sunday night which I thought would make things better and the very next day he was MUCH worse.. if lactulose works then that shouldn’t have happened. I haven’t actually found that any of the medication his on seems to improve things like it seems to for other people on the forum.

LOLA as I said did nothing good for my hubby, he deteriorated whilst on it though I can't say it was LOLA making it worse. Is Dad moving his bowels frequently enough? - 3 to 4 times a day.

Is he also on Rifaximin? Hubby was on Lactulose, Rifaximin and LOLA at the same time.

Yes that’s what dad is on, all three, says he is going to the toilet 3/4 times a day but he could be fibbing, I’ll see what happens in the next couple of weeks. Thank you.

Dear Lilu1

If you [are in the UK and] would find it useful to talk things over, our nurse-led helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm on 0800 652 7330 (excluding bank holidays).

We also facilitate a range of virtual support groups for people living with a liver condition (and their families and carers) including a monthly carers group.

If you [are in the UK and] would find it helpful to speak to others with shared experience, you can register to join a group here:
