HEPATIC ENCEPHALITIS AGAIN

My husband's specialist has given us a private prescription for L-ornithine L-aspantate more commonly known as LOLA, 3 x 6g sachets per day in water, 28 days supply for £400. He said at the time of prescribing that it was a very difficult drug to try and find in this country as it comes from Europe. He was right! Our pharmacist is trying his best but as yet, to no avail. Has anyone had any experience with LOLA please?

Good morning,

I recollect that you were having problems in getting Rifaxamin prescribed.

Did you get that sorted ?

I and others have had excellent results from the combination of Rifaxamin and lactulose, all prescribed on the NHS without the need to pay anything privately.

Yes Peter has been taking Rifaxamin for several months together with lactulose. However his encephalitis is still a big problem and his hepatologist has prescribed LOLA as well. Our pharmacist has eventually found a supplier at a cost of £700pm but now our GP is trying to help. Thank you for your reply

Reading various pages about the tests and trials with LOLA it looks like there was no conclusive proof that it actually worked any better than lactulose for controlling HE. Trials were poorly done in countries such as Mexico and China & results weren't to be relied upon.

Most people do find that Rifaximin in conjunction with Lactulose do help and as Jim says all on the NHS without paying for anything.

Also removing red meat from the diet - one lady who was posting changed her hubby to a pure vegetarian diet and his saw a huge improvement to his HE symptoms.

Thank you Katie, as ever, for all your wise words and help. I will definitely axe red meat. Anne.

I use rifaxin, lactulouse, and a special antibiotic, co trimoxal (spelling?) three times a week.

I also have sachets on standby. But when I'm really bound up I go ahead and use fleets enemas. They help a lot. That's what they give you in hospital or a enema when your having an HE attack.

I have no problem using them at home and get three prescribed at the same time.

It's an American brand, but my pharmacy carries it.

I get HE pretty bad, and have suffered with constipation since I was 12 years old. So I'm used to the fleets.

Quick, painless and toxins are gone within 15-20 minutes.

I don't know anything about the meds your mentioning and I've tried most if not all of them.

Good luck!

Thanks Kimberley, this is great. Will get Peter to GP for both antibiotics and Fleets. Very grateful, Anne.
