First time and terrified.

My first ever post and would love advice please. About 2 months ago I started experiencing liver pain. Went to the docs who confirmed that my liver felt enlarged but not to worry. She sent me for bloods and a CT scan. All of my bloods were spot on and the CT with contrast, showed that my liver, gallbladder, kidneys and pancreas were all good too. It only showed I had some diverticulitis. The doc tells me the ongoing pain I have is referred from that. I eat well, not overweight and walk daily. I have suffered with GERD and take medication. I have read (I know I shouldn’t) that you can still have liver issues with good bloods and CT so I’ve terrified myself!! Thank you for listening ☺️

I am no expert, and certainly not medically trained, but my understanding is that the liver can't actually feel pain, as it does not have pain receptors. Sometimes the capsule around it can be tight, which might cause discomfort. Try not to worry until you know you have something to worry about. Easier said than done, I know. Good luck to you.

I’m so very grateful for your reply. I lost my father and brother to liver disease and I think I probably overthink everything. Google doesn’t help either!!

Take care and thanks again.

Hello,

The liver doesn’t have pain receptors so any pain will be something else. If your liver was significantly damaged you would expect to see some indication from blood or scans so I think you should be guided by your doctors in this case.

It’s also a good reminder though to take care of your liver. Eat healthily, get exercise and make sure if you drink that you have several days in between drinking to allow recovery - consistent low level drinking can damage your liver and many people do not know this.

Best of luck!

Thank you so much for replying. It has put my mind at rest. As I said, I eat well and exercise regularly but it has made me be very vigilant about alcohol! I really appreciate you taking time out to reply!

I think the key point here is that the likelihood of you having advanced liver damage and it not showing anywhere on either bloods or a CT is pretty remote (from what I have learned as a lay-person). From what you say, you also don’t have any of the major metabolic red flags (obesity, diabetes etc) that would normally be associated with liver issues. I would try to put it out of your mind. :)

Thank you so much for replying. It is makes absolute sense that I don’t have a liver issue so no more googling😂
