hi to you all, sorry to be a pain, I just wondered if anyone would explain something , I don’t want to google because it scares me….. as you all know I have severe fatty liver, I have an appt with my dr in two weeks to discuss my worries and hopefully get a referral or a fibro scan, my question is this, I received my letter back from urology today saying that renal ultrasound ct scan and flexible cycostophy showed no adnormalities for kidneys and bladder (I was checked due to having visible blood in urine) however the ct scan did show diffuse hepatic steotosis, now I kvow hepatic steotosis means fatty liver but the duffuse part worries me as I have no idea what that means? Does it mean my liver is fusing togethe? Could someone please explain what this means please, thank you ever so much in advance xx

Hi Sophia, diffuse means spread over a wide area. I don’t think it’s anything to panic about, I think it would be weird if they could only see fatty liver in just one patch. Just another thing to add to your list to ask the doctor to explain. 10/10 for not googling!

thank you so much, I was worried that it meant another stage as in Nash , that actually makes sense the way you have explained it , I will definitely ask questions , now I kvow more as what to ask her thanks to people like yourself xx

Hi Sophia

No it doesn't mean that.... diffuse Fatty infiltration simply means - the fat in the liver is spread over a wide area as opposed to focal fatty sparing - which is when there are areas of normal liver tissue within areas of fatty liver.

It is still considered quite reversible but assessment for any liver fibrosis is still best practice once fatty liver is diagnosed.

Good luck

Chris

thank you Chris, I guess this is why they said it is severe fatty liver , because it covers a big area, could I still possibly have no fibrosis or at least early stage? I will definitely ask my dr for a fibro scan , thank you for your help xx

You're welcome Sophia and yes it's quite possible that you've 'just' fatty liver.

Again, even mild to moderate fibrosis is considered reversible. Anything more than that would likely have been evident in your imaging and would have been mentioned. Whilst mild fatty infiltration and mild fibrosis can look similar on imaging - advanced fibrosis tends to look distinctly lumpy and uneven, whereas fat is manifestly bright.

Obviously this is conjecture based on little information but I wouldn't worry too much as the approach to improving your liver health remains the same.

oh bless you Chris, thank you ever so much, that really has made me feel better, I get myself worried so much because everything says scans can’t tell the difference between simple fatty liver and higher grades, and I know this sounds bad but I’m one of those people who are their own worst enemy, if I think I have no chance I’m likely to comfort eat, that’s awful but I’m being totally honest, on the other hand if I feel there is something worth saving as in being able to reverse things, then I become the most focussed person you could meet, honestly you have really helped me, thank you my little love, xx

No it doesn't. You just need to go on a diet and eat healthily. It's reversible.

I am trying to do all of that …. Having diebetes, high blood pressure and poly cystic ovaries have not helped …. But I am trying hard, I just hope it’s not too late, thank you for replying to me xx

hi. My scan has indicated diffuse fatty liver. I saw the consultant 4 months ago. He advised weight loss as main treatment. I agree it’s not easy but make small changes and try to increase exercise. The thought of my condition getting worse motivates me. I’ve lost 12 pounds so far. Still some to go !

aww thank you so much for your information , that means a lot, did you have any symptoms as to why they looked at your liver? Also we’re your bloods still normal , like you I am more motivated to lose the weight, I was a bit upset though cos I was told fatty liver two years ago, I lost two stone then had another scan and my fatty liver had increased, this worries me because that don’t sound right to me xx

I felt more tired than usual but had also suffered with covid last year. I do get occasional right sided upper gastric pain for short periods but scan also showed gallstones. I am due to see consultant next month but fibroscan number last week had increased !. I am trying not to be worried , I just hope all my efforts are not in vain as that will really de motivate me .

aww bless you hun, I’m sure all will be ok, I kvow how worrying it is, the main thing is you are taking these steps and no matter what that has to be better for you, please let me kvow how you get on, I really do want a fibro scan so I have something to work with, I hate the not knowing, then again I also hate the finding out, you can’t win with me , good luck for your next test xx

Hi Sophia, I have never been offered a Fibroscan- my consultant told me that my symptoms and a camera down my throat was enough to confirm my decompensated cirrhosis. I believe some other people on here haven't been offered one either. From my own experience the very best thing you can do is eat the right diet (lots of info available on this site) and abstain from alcohol. There are an infinite amount of uncertainties where the liver is concerned, don't get yourself worried about numbers xxxx good luck

hi Emma, thank you so much for your reply, I am sorry to hear that you have decompensated cirrhosis, I really am trying to pull my diet in, I’m just useless at working my conditions together, diebetes and carbs, wdeia (rare wheat allergy) now the liver, I guess fresh fruit and veg fit with all, but juggling it all is a nightmare, I will look on here as you suggest though, so thank you….. my doctor told me that she has only seen one person with non alcoholic fatty liver disease go on to get cirrhosis, but reading on here I find that so hard to believe, I also can’t get my head around not knowing if mine is simple fatty liver or Nash, I know a scan can not tell the difference, you are right, the main thing is to control the diet, but it just niggles me that I don’t have the facts as to how bad or not bad I may be. I really appreciate your time and I’m sorry to go on when you have your own bigger issues, I feel like I am taking the mick really with my questions hope all goes well for you going forward my lovely xx
