If you could get an answer to this quandry you'd be on to a winner because sadly it is a very common and debilitating symptom of cirrhosis.

The BLT have a page about sleep management but i've got to say not much has helped hubby with his sleep patterns. britishlivertrust.org.uk/sl...

initially after diagnosis my sleep was awful, once I stared to have a snack before bed ( eating was a problem so this was a challenge ) and a magnesium supplement each day I’m fast asleep by 9pm and don’t wake until 6am, I never slept that long or well for years. It’s trial and error what works for everyone. Good luck 🍀

This is all too familiar to a lot on here. We proved that getting over tired or having a busier day than usual definately made it worse - so a vicious circle but worth keeping in mind. Also, on a busy day he would drink less fluid and this had an impact for sure. Also, initially Rifaxomin had an impact - might be worth mentioning these symtoms next time you are with your consultant and see if they think its worth prescribing.Atb

Hi Gweans, I am sorry to hear this. My daughter in has just finished her PhD thesis in human physiology specialising in sleep and sleep patterns. We were discussing this very topic as its a well known problem which we haven't reached yet. She recommended use of blue light during the day. This is the light we get from mobile phones, Ipads, computers as this does something to the brain keeping it alert. We didn't discuss too much as we're dealing with other issues. Give it a try. Good luck

hi Gweans Insomnia is really debilitating, as i also suffer with it. I try to manage it by not napping during day and keeping busy and getting fresh air. When it gets really bad and I’m exhausted I go to bed at eight take a nytol 50 mg and I sleep for 8- 9 hours. Because the liver doesn’t work well pain relief meds etc work really well for me same with sleep meds. But I only use these meds very sparingly. Your consultant can offer you something for these nasty side effects.

I use essential oils in a diffuser, about 8 drops from each oil, using a combination of 3 oils. I use lavender, lemongrass and cedarwood or peppermint. This definitely works for me, plus it smells good too!
