Ive been diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, but im now doing pretty well. I'm really struggling with heartburn at the moment. It's given me a nasty cough as well. Does anyone have any suggestions on what u can take? Thanks in advance. X

Ask about being prescribed a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) such as Omeprazole, Lansoprazole.

My hubby used to have horrible heartburn/indigestion/reflux to the point he'd be bent double with pain and he's been on Omeprazole for it.

Have you had an endoscopy at all?

Hubbies pain was an indicator of changes in his stomach lining and oesophagus due to portal hypertension - a symptom of his cirrhosis.

Don't suffer in silence, your doctor meeds to know about this.

Good stuff, hopefully that will make a difference - my hubby also found that various foods made his heartburn worse - citrus, acidic stuff - coleslaw, pickles, orange juice etc. so learned to avoid those.

If you haven't yet had an upper GI endoscopy it might be worthwhile asking your consultant whether they plan to do one as your symptoms could be related to your cirrhosis diagnosis. Things like gastropathy in the stomach, varices can also be affected by excess stomach acid so you need to find out whether you have any of these complications related to portal hypertension and cirrhosis.

I've had two endoscopies quite recently and it's been fine. Thanks for the advice x

hi, I hope the Omeprazole helps, it wasn’t the drug for me and I kept having to go back to the Dr’s and insist we tried something different as I was in constant pain with reflux ( I do have portal hypertension ) and we gave Rabeperazole a try and it’s been fantastic. I hope you find what works for you 😊

Hi,I’m on omeprazole and it works for me. The consultant told me it’s fine to take it as and when Ineed it. Took it consistently every day for a while to get symptoms under control. Have had periods when I don’t need it and a couple of flare ups when I’ve needed it twice a day.

When I get a flare up, I get heart burn and reflux at night laying down. If it’s bad I have a glass of cold milk or a banana and then sit up in bed for a while. That usually calms it down enough to get back to sleep. Hope. This helps.

I’ve been taking Nexium for years. And it works very well for me. Of course you need to ask your doctor. Hope this helps.
