Prescription question

Hi

Currently waiting for some test results from QE hospital, that may possibly require medication.. as I live about 40miles away, would they be able to send the prescription to my local pharmacy or can they only be collected from the hospital pharmacy? Many thanks.

This shouldn’t be an issue, best speak to the pharmacy at the hospital and ask if they can send the prescription to your local one.

I'd speak to the clinic or consultant secretary at the QE and ask them to help arrange for the prescription to be sent to your GP, that way, if it is going to be a repeat prescription, your doctor is aware and will save confusion later on.

it would depend on what the prescription is for. When I was prescribed drugs for Hep C I had to collect them from the hospital. They said it was because the drugs are so expensive £36,000 for a 12 week course!!

I do a shared care kind of thing . After the initial prescribing the hospital contacted my doctors . So now I get these ordered from my doctors which goes to my local pharmacy

Hi Ktan49 generally when I talk to the consultant he/she writes the prescription and puts on it for the hospital pharmacy to deliver and they will ring you and give you a date when it will arrive so you can sign for it. If you don’t get the call within about a week you email the pharmacy directly. The reason you email is so there is a paper trail, I really understand if you don’t like emails I’m 69 and not used to emails but once you send the first one it’s easy after that. Good luck 👍.

As others have said, it may just depend on what is being prescribed. Some meds, like immune suppression tend now to be only issued by the hospital. However, with a few other exceptions, pretty much everything else can be prescribed locally. What normally happens us the hospital will write to your gp and ask them to prescribe it. If they are notifying you of the results by letter, it'll be the same letter that goes to your gp. Depending on your normal arrangements at your gp practice, they will either send the prescription on to your pharmacy, if you subscribe to electronic prescribing, or ask you to come in to collect it, and get it filled in person. If you get your letter from the hospital and don't hear anything from your gp, you may need to just pop in and check with the receptionist to make sure it gets issued. Things can go ary at times.

If it is something that's only hospital prescribed then you may also be able to get that delivered. I'm not sure if that can be done direct with the pharmacy or not. If not, just get in touch with your consultant's secretary and they may be able to help make the necessary arrangements.

You may also find you may not get the results till your next clinic anyway. So that solves all the issues. Just collect them on your way out, lol.
