Hi. Wondering if anyone on here has had the above diagnosis. The drug involved was Nitrofuratan. The Consultant has told me the scarring will not heal.

Prescription drug induced Fibrosis

Were you on a prolonged dose of Nitrofurantoin? Sadly whilst almost totally safe in a one off prescription this is a a known trigger drug for many people's Auto Immune Hepatitis when used as a long term 'preventative' for UTI's.
Have you been tested for AIH as the possible cause of your fibrosis? If it is AIH and there is active ongoing inflammation it can often be brought under control with steroids and possibly at a later stage immune suppressants. If it is a DILI - Drug Induced Liver Injury it may be that the damage is done and it's a case of dealing with any other symptoms that get thrown up.
My hubby has cirrhosis due to AIH and there is a question mark as to whether or not his was potentially triggered by long term prescription of an antibiotic for acne, by the time his was discovered he was in a decompensated state with no ongoing liver inflammation but obviously a very damaged liver.

Hi I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I was recently prescribed the same drug for a UTI recently. How many times have you been prescribed Nitrofuraton?
Oops! Just checked spelling....Nitrofurantoin 100mg
Nitrofurantoin is often the correct antibiotic for specific UTI's - so a one of prescription is generally totally safe. Even people with AIH can be safely prescribed it short term. Problems with it tend to arise where people have been given it on a long term basis as a prophylactic.
