Recently I've had high alp 180 and alt 100 so I was sent for a Fibroscan.My results are 11.3 and 346.

I'm very overweight and trying to loose does anyone know if these results can be reversed with a healthy diet and weight loss (a lot).

There is always room for improvement with your liver health if you are more of a healthier weight - your inflammation markers being raised as they are could have potentially over inflated your CAP and kPa scores so getting the ALP, ALT down can also bring your scores lower.

The British Liver Trust has excellent information on NAFLD and a downloadable leaflet about treating the condition with healthy diet and exercise.

Thank you so much for your reply, I'm very worried about these results as they seem to mean F3 liver fibrosis.

Looks like S3 steatosis stage 3 and Fibrosis grade 3 as you say but this should be reversible ......... anything up to full blown F4 fibrosis/cirrhosis is hopefully reversible.

It most certainly is reversible, I had pretty much the same cap score, but my KPA was 22.2. It’s now 9 and my cap score is under 140.

That’s through a healthy balanced diet, regular exercise and staying sober. My extreme fatty liver wasn’t because I was obese, overweight, but because of alcoholism and a really really poor diet of takeaways, fatty processed foods and poor eating habits such as zero breakfast, snacking on crisps and pasties for lunch and eating very late in the evening, that’s if I could stomach it after downing half a bottle of whiskey every 2 nights.

I’ve also reversed or resolved other complications such as IBS, diffuse colitis, daily almost 3 hourly heart burn, acid reflux, ascites and jaundice. You have to remove the things that are toxic to your organs, your mind and your body and then you have to exercise both. Daily walks and fresh air is often all it takes once you cut out the nasty toxic stuff and while it’s always best to get to a weight that is appropriate for one’s age, height, sex and body shape, you don’t have to become stick thin to return your body to a healthy state.

Many people think they must shed not just lots of pounds, but lots of stones, and quickly, that can be damaging in itself doing so. Take one day at a time, start with walking, light exercises, getting fresh air and work on a diet that WORKS for you. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your health can turn around just by taking small steps at first and adjusting your diet.

Good luck, you can do this. I was at death’s door this time last year, yellow, bloated with ascites, a fully blown alcoholic and days away from a 2 week stay in hospital. If you drink, cut it down or cut it out as that more than anything is the most damaging toxin to your liver and with it your other organs.

Thank you, the good news is of course, it can all be reversed and while it’s scary when you get test results back that are imperfect, it needn’t be this fatal outlook it can seem, it can be the start of an amazing journey towards better health which I’m sure will prove to be the case for yourself. Again you can do this. Set yourself some small targets perhaps like getting that Kpa down to under 10, the cap score down to 300. And so on and so on. All the best!

I would t read too much into what Google returns, I’m living proof an extreme fatty liver can be reversed and my doctor said he has patients with cirrhosis who were diagnosed o er 20 years ago alive and well and those who are 20 years into a transplant, on the other hand he’s had patients who were diagnosed, did OK for 2 or so years then were hit by all kinds of complications leading to an early death.

I’ve heard stories of people with cirrhosis who were diagnosed a decade ago and still drink and are alive, while I’ve heard many stories when I was in hospital of people leaving hospital and returning to drink again and being found dead in their home a few months later.

With liver disease it affects everyone differently, especially cirrhosis and especially alcoholic cirrhosis. Just follow whatever your doctors say, find the right diet appropriate for you and your own liver and the best advice I got from my doctor was to keep moving, you don’t have to become a fitness freak or go on some mad crash diet, you can get a fatty liver just by being immobile and house bound. It’s not an obesity or weight only thing either, I had an extreme fatty liver while I was underweight due to malnourishment and muscle wasting.

Doesn't sound too bad Jinnie, I'm not overweight and my scan was 17.9. I thought I was very healthy eating a wide variety of food and no crap. then after my fibroscan and a few more test's found I had NAFLD with scaring to give me cirrhosis. Normal scans are around 7, so 11.3 isn't that high, so you should be able to bring it down with a good diet. Ask to see a nutritionist. Good luck. Mike

Yes it will improve but you must lose weight. My reading was much higher than yours when first diagnosed but I have lost nearly 3 stones and my results have improved dramatically. So good luck with healthier diet x.

That is a high cap score it only goes to 400. But again it’s not just a weight issue, far from it, it’s what you’re putting into your body that’s damaging your liver and what you aren’t doing to stop it. For me it was alcohol and an extremely poor diet and when I lost a lot of weight I was losing my muscle and a damaged liver will feed off the protein in the muscles to try and stay working and that’s what it did and will continue to do unless I prevent it. Hence why I’m on a high protein diet and also try and work my major muscle groups even if it’s just stretching and walking. You don’t have to be a gym freak or lose a tonne of weight, it will help of course, but it’s about cutting out the very things your liver doesn’t need and finding a balance between that and what it DOES need and that can all be found in food and the right nutrients, minerals and vitamins from that for your liver. Research all the food groups from meat to vegetables to fruit and plant based and you’ll be amazed, it’s all right there, everything we need to fuel our bodies.
