diabetes due to fibrosis?

Hello I have been diagnosed with diabetes type 2. I am not overweight and have no family history of diabetes. I have had problems with fluctuating liver values but never very high. I wonder if anyone recognizes this? could my diabetes be due to liver fibrosis?

Put simply; yes.

Your liver plays a significant role in maintaining your glucose levels. Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, alcoholic liver disease or fibrosis may mean that your liver can't perform all its' normal functions and therefore T2 diabetes develops.

Ok, but would My bloodtest be normal at that stage…?

I don't know I'm afraid.

Have you had blood tests done and is that showing consistently elevated liver function tests? Have you had any other tests done that indicate an issue with your liver?

T2 diabetes can be caused by any number of factors; physical inactivity even if a normal weight, certain ethnic backgrounds are more at risk, smoking. Its more common if you are overweight or have a family history of it but it can also just develop. If the liver tests are elevated only sometimes you might be better off following any GP advice eating a healthy diet (reducing carbohydrate and sugar intake can be beneficial), taking medication as prescribed.

my liver enzymes have sometimes been slightly above the normal limit, but can always connect these occasions to periods where I drank alcohol. so mostly they are normal. my other values are normal.. I have had an operation to remove the gall bladder and think it should be discovered if something was wrong with the liver during the operation(?) I also did an ultrasound which showed a small area of fatty infiltration but nothing else abnormal.

A common thing after gb removal is a condition called bile acid malabsorption. I have this. I was also diagnosed with fibrosis. And a few years ago type 2 diabetes kicked in too. So it’s the whole metabolic system that can be an issue. I’ve no family history and not overweight, I eat low fat etc. I’m in my mid 50s now and issues with diarrhoea since my mid 20s, liver issues found in my late 30s, diabetes kicked in a few years ago when I hit menopause.

No, through a lot of different blood tests and a fibroscan

12.7 kPa and Cap 334 (Fib-4 was 1.56, Elf 11.4). My ALT has been as high as over 200, but its stable around 100-120 usually.

That is interesting, I have a 9.0 kPa and am being told I have cirrhosis due to that fact that I had ascites. It would be interesting to see what an ultrasound shows for you...mine was showing nodular contour but the last one in October and the Elastology ultrasound on Nov 1 did not say nodular contour so I am hoping with all my heart that it truly has disappeared and was not missed on the reports!!

Anyway - I am also showing up as borderline diabetic and am doing the A1C end of each month test...praying that it clears up with good diligence around sugar intake, I eat well and exercise and am not overweight but my Father did have it. Good luck to you...we got this!

I think it depends why you have fibrosis - is it because of fatty liver, or due to alcohol consumption? I think the threshold if it's alcohol is lower? I may be wrong. Good luck with HbA1C, I'm on 4x Metformin for mine and is currently at 46 so doing ok. Yes we have!

Not sure what yours was but sadly mine was fatty liver from eating and alcohol...I am not over weight but loved my sugar and way too much alcohol through COVID unfortunately...:(

Mines from NAFLD, I don't drink, literally a glass of bucks fizz christmas day! gave it up in my 20s when I had children, not that I drank much anyway as I drove a lot from aged 18!

have you had any pancreatic issues? As I think it's the only other organ apart from your liver that regulates blood sugar. It might be worth asking
