Coffee alternatives?

Sooo, finally had my outpatient appointment. Was told by the consultant that drinking 2-4 cups of coffee a day would be very helpful.

Alas, I am proper allergic to coffee- tongue and throat swell up, puffy tingly lips etc. Consultant quite useless and suggested trying decaff coffee ( which bit of anaphylactic reaction did they not understand?).

Are tea or Pro Plus caffeine tablets acceptable substitutes for coffee? I am assuming that it is caffeine that is the active useful chemical. If not and it's all the other chemicals in coffee, then it's a bit stupid to suggest I try it, when I have informed the consultant it could potentially kill me..

There is a lot of evidence that moderate consumption of coffee is good for your liver. Not only does it help prevent liver disease, it also slows down the progression of scarring in existing cases of chronic liver problems. My consultant has also advised drinking a couple of cups a day. The research isn’t clear about how much caffeine is a component but does point to other benefits even in decaffeinated coffee. It depends what you’re allergic to…are you ok with decaffeinated? Is it the caffeine or the coffee itself that’s the problem? I don’t think there’s an alternative to coffee sadly. Keeping away from alcohol, eating a healthy diet and exercise are also very important in liver disease.

All of the information I have read suggests that coffee is beneficial but no other caffeine rich products have been found to be beneficial in the same way.

hi Dino my understanding is it’s not the caffein that’s beneficial to help cleanse the liver it’s the ground coffee beans that provide the benefits hence why they suggested decaf.

I was also advised green tea if coffee doesn’t suit you. Hope that helps.
