Fibroscan results

hi my daughter has just recently had a Fibroscan , the results came back reading between 20.8 Kpa and 49.4 Kpa does this mean she had cirrhosis.

She should have had 10 readings done with a median score (mid-way reading) taken as the overall kPa score and then dependant on the cause of the liver issue it will reveal what this kPa figure reveals on the metavir scale (F0-F4 with F4 being cirrhosis).

That being said - it will also depend what her bloods are also saying just now. A high kPa figure can also result if there is ongoing liver inflammation present - Fibroscan can't tell the difference between actual fibrous tissue and inflammation and sometimes the kPa can be falsely elevated therefore fibroscan alone isn't sufficient to determine cirrhosis or not the result needs to be looked at alongside all other tests she's having.

A score that high is one of the factors that indicate cirrhosis.We can't say a definate yes because of site rules and not knowing her full health records but my scores were lower and I certainly have cirrhosis.

Blood tests and an ultrasound that also indicate cirrhosis will confirm it.

Usualy it's the blood tests and ultrasound tests done first and if they are deranged a fibroscan is done to confirm suspicions of liver disease.

I had every scan and blood test going and the only time they noticed the cirrhosis is when I had my 1st liver biopsy around a year ago. I've been told it's well compensated and I have cut the alcohol out altogether 10 months ago but left in the dark a bit since then. I was put on a resus study to try and stop/ reduce the scarring and just trying to eat a bit better until the next appt with my consultant which is start of November. Maybe I will know a bit more then and have a better idea of what I can be doing/ eating better? I keep getting aching pains in my right side for years if I remember...I keep bringing it up and having more ultrasounds but everything keeps coming back fine so I've just put it down to a liver that's taken a beating over the past 20 or so years?! The trick is to keep it in the compensated state and hope for the best. Good luck 🤞

what is a resus study please

It's a clinical research study/ trial that my consultant put my name forward for. Was a 6 month study where I take 2 capsules per day and go for regular check ups, blood tests at hospital. I had a biopsy at the start and had another at the end. Its not showing much difference but the doctor did say that as its when they look further into the samples in finer detail that they will know if its working and reduced the scarring. I was due to go on the similar study a couple of weeks back called horizon but didn't qualify as I've only just come off the last study but she did say...there's always new trials coming up and looking for new people so maybe worth speaking with your doctor/ consultant. I assume its a lot easier to get exempted for future trials once they have all your details and consent form
