I just wondered if anyone may be able to offer any advice in our situation. My mum was diagnosed with cirrhosis 8 years ago and gave up alcohol. Unfortunately she started drinking again 4 years ago. She was in hospital for 6 weeks earlier this year and diagnosed with hepatic encephalopathy. I thought that would stop her drinking but it hasn’t 😞. She had been left with very reduced movement, slurring and confusion. She was rushed to hospital this week and we are 5 days into it again. She can’t get up, talk and has very yellow eyes and just sleeps. The hospital told me on Friday that this is part of end stage liver failure, but we weren’t aware she had that. They apologised but said a doctor needs to discuss it further. Since then there hasn’t been a doctor available over the weekend to talk to us and we are left in limbo and very worried. She is very poorly and on oxygen. Does anyone have any advice? I feel totally out of my depth and worried this time she will die 😞. Thank you for any suggestions or thoughts, even if a helpline for advice.
Sending my thoughts to anyone in a tough situation right now xx

Cirrhosis is known as end stage liver disease and when it is showing signs of decompensation then it may well be entitled liver failure. Mum is very poorly just now and medics will be doing all they can for her but with continued alcohol use on her stressed/cirrhotic liver is may have pushed the liver over the edge. There are folks on here who have come back from the brink but it is going to be a waiting game to see if Mum comes through this latest set back - as I say Medics will do their utmost to get her as well as they can but the only hope of any long term health is complete sobriety.
The British Liver Trust has guidance on cirrhosis and it might be helpful for you to have a read and see the facts so you can ask meaningful questions when you get some feedback from doctors. britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate it. Your message is very helpful and I will call the helpline in the morning. Take care xx
Hi there, sorry to hear you are going through this. I'm in a similar situation with my mum albeit she has alcohol related brain damage and continues to drink so suspect it will only be a matter of time till she is in hospital again. If you can, just ask as many questions as you can and check what scans have been done. Good luck this week, hang in there
Hi, I’m sorry to hear about your Mum. It can be difficult to get answers from doctors in hospital because they are so busy but hopefully you’ll speak to someone today and get some answers. You may find Mum drifts in and out so just try to be there and hold her hand. She’ll know you’re there. But pace yourself and look after yourself too. It can be a long hall whichever way it goes. Hang in there x
