HVPG measurement

Has anyone had their portal hypertension measured? (Measurement of portal vein pressure) I’m wondering if there’s any reason to have this done

If so what was your result and how was this used to determine the extent of your liver damage? Thanks for any information.

Hi I had a blockage in the portal vain and ended up having to take warfarin and getting checked every week to ether up or down my medication to keep my INR stable. All I can do is wish you good luck.

I am not aware of a way to measure it that isn’t invasive. Was this suggested for you and if so, how? And why?

I’d love to have the ability to measure HVPG in a noninvasive way!

I’m only aware of evaluating symptoms related to portal hypertension.

I’m wondering if there’s a noninvasive way to measure it and if you don’t have ascites or varices, could you still have portal hypertension ? Wouldn’t it be important to know that? Seems like it should be part of the tests done if you have liver disease, since this is what causes all the serious problems.

here’s an article on it. It explains a lot of the pitfalls and obstacles in measuring portal hypertension .

They propose spleen stiffness as a way to comparatively measure portal hypertension. I don’t know if any additional studies have been done or if any doctors use this. I haven’t heard of such.
