hi just wondering if anyone has any advice on what exercise I can do with portal hypertension don’t want to do more harm
exercise : hi just wondering if anyone... - British Liver Trust
exercise
Walking and swimming are both good. Just avoid pumping iron in the gym.
My hubby just did normal everyday activity whilst he was undergoing variceal banding from P/H. Walking most days - a mile +.

Morning love.I was told by my then gastro consultant, that walking , gentle cycling, not mountain biking, swimming etc would be ok. And I'm still being told the same now, from my liver nurse as still have portal hypertension, and some varices. Awaiting another endoscopy appointment to look again to see if more banding is required.
I walk 2-3miles aday though.
My best. Chris
thank you for your reply I’m just so scared to make matters worse x
I'm using an app that is for women's fitness and there are a lot of light exercises on there and you can pick and chooses which ones you do. It's called workout for women
Like walks around your neighborhood, 10-15 minutes at a time. A few times a week. Lifting light weights can be helpful too (no more than 10 lbs)
As others stated you need to do exercise to maintain muscle and keep fit enough for transplant should you need one. Walking is great - go for distance rather than speed walking, swimming, yoga or Pilates good for muscle strength and balance.
You will benefit from walking as other members have posted. This will give you plenty of fresh air too and you will meet other people on the way who will converse with you. No need to tell them about your problems unless they are your friends. Chatting to people will also take your mind off matters. Take care and all the best.
Hey Disney,
Same here! Walking, yoga, light weights.
I had sore muscular pain many months ago, so decided to try Asian reflexology massage (NOT acupuncture ): pressure points in feet and hands with back shiatsu massage. I’m not sure if there are any possible medical issues with it. ? I heard massage was good.
It helps with circulation and feels fantastic. I haven’t had one in ages and actually scheduled one for this weekend!
Has anyone dabbled in this ?
Take care

After 7 months of being diagnosed with decompensated cirrhosis I’ve just started venturing out for a 20 min walk. My muscles have wasted so I have to be careful but I’m determined to get some fresh air and keep the body going! I have the old ascities and portal hypertension too so I do start to feel light headed and uncomfortable after 20 mins.
Like someone else mentioned I was told it’s not about speed but distance if you’re able.
I hope to be able to achieve what some say they can do on this forum exercise wise in the future.
Good luck with your exercise when you decide what suits you 👍
