What's kPa ?

I keep seeing people say their "kPa" is this or that but I don't see a kPa number anywhere on our FibroSure FibroScan test. What is kPa or is that just a European thing?

Thank you!

Has your husband had a Fibroscan ?

This scan is similar to an ultrasound but they use a probe to take about 10 readings across the liver. These readings will reveal a kPa (kiloPascals) score for tissue density (0-75) - they report the middle figure of the 10 scores as median kPa score - based on the kPa they can work out the degree of fibrosis present.

Likewise fibroscan can also take readings for fatty change in the liver and reports that in a CAP score.

Fibrosure and fibroscan are different tests. Fibrosure/fibrotest is a score based on a calculation from a set of blood tests.

*Fibroscan has it's limitations in that in someone with ongoing inflammation of the liver it can sometimes report too high a figure for kPa.

Thank you Katie for responding. Yes, he has had a Fibroscan. That's what I was reading but I didn't see anywhere on there where it says kPa.

Fibrosis Score 0.93 = F4 Cirrhosis [ Range 0.00 - 0.21 = Normal ]

Steatosis Score 0.95 = Marked or Severe Steatosis [ Range 0.00 - 0.30 = Normal ]

NASH Score 0.50 = F4 Borderline / Probable NASH [ Range 0.00 - 0.25 = Normal ]

_______

Bilirubin 3.4

GGT 901

ALT 276

AST 210

ALK Phos 926

CHOLESTEROL TOTAL 635

GLUCOSE 102 (99 or less is Normal)

Everything else on this test is Normal.

_________

He does not have Hepatitis.

Even a Calcium CT Score came back with 0,0,0. No build up or blockages.

They did a Lipid Panel breakdown and while his cholesterol is through the roof, his Triglycerides are normal. His Concentration and Particle Size were, and I quote, "The best we have EVER seen . . . . I mean we never see numbers this good! We just don't understand it. Go see a specialist."

5 doctors later, the current doctor thinks this could be Hypercholesterolemia.

That would appear to be the results for a Fibrotest not a fibroscan. The conversion of FibroTest score into stages according to the three most used histological classifications (METAVIR, Knodell and Ishak) for liver biopsies is:

FibroTest METAVIR Knodell Ishak

0.75-1.00 ...F4............. F4 ...........F6

0.73-0.74... F3-F4....... F3-F4... F5

0.59-0.72.... F3.............. F3 ..........F4

0.49-0.58..... F2............... F1-F3 ...F3

0.32-0.48....... F1-F2 .....F1-F3.. F2-F3

0.28-0.31..... F1 ..............F1........... F2

0.22-0.27 ......F0-F1...... F0-F1.. F1

0.00-0.21 ........F0............ F0.......... F0

Never heard of Fibro test, There is only Fibroscan. I had one two years ago.

The blood tests I hear are as accurate as fibroscan.🤷‍♂️

Are you in the UK? None of this makes sense. There Ultrascans and Fibroscans, the FS doesn't break down into different areas it gives one overall reading.

There is such thing as Fibrotest, it's done using blood results rather than a scan. "FibroTest, known as FibroSure in the US, is a biomarker test that uses the results of six blood serum tests to generate a score that is correlated with the degree of liver damage in people with a variety of liver diseases. FibroTest has the same prognostic value as a liver biopsy. "

That explains it. US only.

Fibrosure is a blood test.Fibroscan is a jelly on the belly type scan a little more advanced that a normal ultrasound.

He would feel light tapping from the fibroscan scan probe.

Theres also another jelly on the belly one called shearwave that does not tap but still gives a liver density reading.

Thank you for taking time to reply. I will need to look into the shear wave test. I’m not so keen on the whole go in and take “clippings” off the liver test.

Mine was F4 39.2 that's all I know. Early Cirrhosis. It's important not use Dr Google, or share lots of out of context statistics and readings. It is meaningless, causing anxiety to those that cannot understand or might misleading. Unless people are medically qualified it's best to just discuss the problems rather than offering readings, Fibroscan uses sheer wave technology the probe is placed at a point between two ribs, Not sure where all these other readings are coming from.
