Erectile disfunction

Hi, since I have had a liver transplant I have struggled to maintain an erection. My consultant has sent me for tests, I think they tested my testosterone levels but everything seems okay.

Since my transplant in October 2021. I have got cirrhosis again.

They are keeping an eye on me as I'm not far off going back on the transplant list again.

Just wondering if anyone has had ED since transplant?

Thanks in advance.

Refs.

Your issue probably stems from having cirrhosis again rather than a post transplant issue. It is common for men with cirrhosis to suffer hormone imbalance and therefore loss of libido and sexual function plus loss of male pattern body hair, gynaemastia (boob growth). My hubby has has no function 'down there' since well before his cirrhosis diagnosis. He's not on diuretics either which can sometimes exacerbate these issues.

HI, be very careful with what you are saying, hypogonadism can be caused by many other factors. I never suffered from body hair loss or indeed facial hair loss or breast growth. I had a testosterone measure of 9.3 nmols, 10nmols is the lower limit normal. 12 nmols and above is what most men will have, as men age their T level will fall and if you are obese (I have a BMI of 36.2).When my testosterone dropped I thought this meant I had cirrhosis and tried to kill myself, so be please be careful what you post!

I now have a fibro of 8.8 and I have been signed off with fatty liver, address with exercise and diet. I do not have cirrhosis.

When I started my Testogel daily dosage my libido did not improve but my mood did. I threw my anti depressants away (don't do this you should come off them gradually).

Within 3 days my libido returned, it had shrunk (lack of use) and I was given a vacuum tube to grow it. I found it impossible to use but over time with marital relations it is back to normal.

I think low T caused lack of libido and made me depressed. The anti depressants also had a profound impact on libido.

Once my T was back the anti depressants were no longer needed and that boosted my libido

Sorry for sharing this but I think it is important that we share this, libido is an integral part of who you are

There is nothing incorrect in what I posted when it is obvious I was posting to someone who has known cirrhosis - the symptoms are listed on the BLT page on cirrhosis - britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

in men: enlarged breasts and shrunken testes

in women: irregular or lack of menstrual periods

impotence and loss of sexual desire

Plus, I was sharing our personal experience. My hubby and I have never been able to have any 'bedroom activity' due to his loss of both libido and complete lack of function and no doctor has ever offered treatment for this side of his cirrhosis because I guess it's been more important to keep his liver functioning rather than dealing with this particular side effect. We met as partners in 2010 and married post his diagnosis in 2012 and in all that time there has been no sexual side to our relationship - plenty hugging and love & we have a massively strong relationship.

Katie. Thanks for always bringing me your vast knowledge. it's always very helpful to me as even know I've been through it, I find it helpful to talk to someone else who's been through it.

Hey Iro, I’m sorry about the attempt and I’m glad you’re doing better. However Katie was spot on in her post. All symptoms can be related to various conditions but what Katie said is pretty relevant and established. It’s not to say it can’t improve but there is certainly a correlation. Take care.

I have the same issues as you - without the cirrhosis!!

I had erectile issues pre transplant, but, within days of the transplant 4 years ago, everything seemed to be working again. Then about 9 months later the erectile issues came back.

Mentioned it during various follow up checks, and had the blood tests done re testosterone, and all was well there.

I have no explanation, just similar situation. Hope you manage to avoid another transplant.

Hi Refs I have had ED since before being diagnosed with cirrhosis we think because of my drinking problem but I take Sildenafil which is a type of Viagra just a different name with great success. I have asked the consultant and they have said no problem taking it, I also have INR checked regularly with me being on Walfarin and again no problem so give it ago. You and your partner have to work a little more than before but with the right for play 👍. Good luck.

Stay safe All
